Heavy Equipment Mechanic III - Loveland

Responsibilities
Diagnoses problems, disassembles units, inspects composites and analyzes failures, replaces or repairs failed parts, and properly reassembles units in the following systems: brakes, drive, electrical, hydraulic, air, steering and suspension systems, engines, computer controlled sanders and de-icing systems and AVL systems
Performs preventive maintenance including: routine maintenance checks, performing inspections and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches, changing filters and oil, lubricating vehicles and motor driven equipment, tuning gas and diesel engines, servicing valves, fuel filters and turbo chargers, pressure checking fuel filters, adjusting injector heights, fuel racks, governors, etc
Maintains service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and equipment
Completes annual DOT safety inspections on the vehicle fleet and certify vehicles for 49 CFR 396 DOT compliance
Completes preventive maintenance work orders
Diagnoses equipment components for defects or malfunctions, utilizing a wide range of test equipment including scan tools and diagnostic computers
Visually inspects equipment for defects and/or leaking fluids
Test drives vehicles and tests operation of equipment and components
Fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts such as mounting brackets, special tooling and other small fabrication projects
Designs, fabricates parts and special tools needed for unique or emergency situations by machining, arc welding and oxygen-acetylene cutting and welding; plasma cutter; MIG and TIG
Sets up and installs new equipment by means of fabricating or modifying to CDOT specifications for special needs and uses of the Department
Performs record keeping and documentation on all assigned units; tracks equipment maintenance, repairs and keeps Federal DOT Inspection records on all equipment
Orders and procures parts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional
Prepares work orders in SAP
Prepares materials estimates
Works with the priority of safety over production for self, co-workers, and the traveling public
Maintains technical knowledge of safety procedures and guidance materials, including Safety Manual and Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Equipment manufacturers safety guides, OSHA publications
Abides by all safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
Attends safety training and participate in tailgate safety talks
Continuously learns and develops job knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and training courses both online and in person
Participates in regional trainings, work unit meetings, informal exchanges, committees, and task forces
Attends new equipment commissioning trainings held by equipment vendors
Maintains technical knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials and adapt to any changes, updates, and any technology improvements or changes
Other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair, that includes at least ONE year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton double axle snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines and/or 15' mower tractors, with current proficiency at the journey level

This position will require a valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A or B with no restrictions on air brakes as a condition of employment
Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks
May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider
Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare
New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora
Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays
Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency
Preferred

Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position
Highest work/personal ethics and integrity
Current, valid CDL Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes
Extensive experience with troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of automotive and heavy duty diesel vehicles and equipment, up to 10 tons is highly desirable
Extensive experience designing and fabricating parts and special tools needed for unique and emergency situations
Medium/Heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation and A/C is preferred
