Public Affairs Specialist

The Public Affairs Specialist will play a vital role in fostering transparency and maintaining effective communication with citizens, media outlets, and stakeholders, while also managing public-facing communications and community outreach campaigns.

Responsibilities
Assist in developing and executing strategic public affairs plans and community outreach campaigns
Draft and edit press releases, speeches, talking points, newsletters, social media content and other public-facing communications
Monitor media coverage, policy developments and legislative activity relevant to the City’s interests and public image
Coordinate responses to media inquiries and help organize press conferences, public meetings and community engagement events
Maintain the City’s public affairs section of the City website and manage social media platforms
Support crisis communications and emergency response messaging
Track media coverage, policy updates, public feedback and stakeholder engagement
Cultivate relationships with media, local organizations, government officials and community leaders
Maintain relationships with Federal, State and Local government offices and support advocacy efforts
Assist departments in aligning public messages with citywide initiatives, organizational goals and branding
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Public Relations, Communications or a related field
Valid Driver's License
Thorough knowledge of social media platforms, design production, social media marketing and related platforms
Strong skills in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop and other marketing/creative software
Ability to independently learn and effectively use third-party software, emerging social media platforms and modern digital media tools
Ability to prepare and present information professionally and effectively to outside organizations, other departments, community groups and the public
Ability to use critical thinking skills to arrive at solutions and suggest improvements to processes
Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative, professional and team-focused relationships with team members, leaders, other departments, community members and the general public
Organized, meticulous and detailed with projects and items produced
Excellent project and time management skills with the ability to prioritize work and resources and meet necessary deadlines
Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in high-stress situations
Strong desire to assist others to achieve their needs in a positive and servant-focused manner
Strong professional, cooperative, positive and team-focused communication in all written and oral forms, including email, letters, memos, etc
Ability to exercise independent judgment and resourcefulness while following processes and procedures as determined
Ability to multi-task and maintain a strong level of organization with evolving and changing priorities
Ability to demonstrate ethical judgment and professionalism when representing the organization in public settings, ensuring integrity, transparency and respect in all communications and interactions
Must maintain confidential and sensitive information with a strong understanding of the impact on the collective team
Ability to work substantially varying schedules that include special events, evenings and weekends and with short notice
Exercise resourcefulness in solving problems in accordance with established policies and practices
Preferred
Minimum of four (4) years' work experience in a professional business environment performing public relations, marketing, communication or related work preferred
