Responsibilities
Assess patient responses to drug therapy and plan drug therapy based on physician-established diagnoses
Receive and review prescriptions, including controlled drugs, on the pharmacy formulary
Assess patient responses to prescription or non-prescription drugs according to established agreements and protocols
Coordinate with prescribers to clarify issues with dosing, interactions, or instructions as needed
Prepare replenishment orders, receive incoming stock, check for discrepancies, and rotate medication stock and supplies
Enter medication orders into an electronic healthcare system and review for allergies, interactions, and duplicate orders
Perform standard assays on finished products, verify ingredients, labeling, and ensure a pharmaceutically elegant product is dispensed
Operate, maintain, and assist with pharmacy equipment, including PYXIS machines and point-of-use medication cabinets
Enter prescriptions into the outpatient computer system, reviewing for allergies, interactions, and duplicate orders
Prepare package labels, inspect medication, verify correctness, and set prescriptions aside for final check by a pharmacist
Provide instructions to patients on proper medication use, referring questions to a pharmacist
Assist in medication storage area inspections and maintain security of pharmaceuticals
Assist with ordering and evaluating laboratory tests necessary to evaluate drug therapy effects
Qualification
Required
Minimum one (1) year of experience within the last five (5) years as an inpatient, outpatient, or oncology pharmacy technician
Graduate from a formal pharmacy technician program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) or a similar program, including military training programs
Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT), or CHPhT
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA)
Compliance with applicable state laws concerning the profession
Preferred
Fully trained and qualified to provide high-quality services
Stability and continuity in the workforce to ensure uninterrupted performance of all tasks
Adherence to professional practice standards and TJC standards
