Signs and Markings Specialist I/II

Responsibilities
Fabricates, maintains, installs and repairs traffic signs, parks and facilities signs, sign components and sign posts
Installs, maintains and removes roadway paint striping, painted curb markings, pavement marker buttons and guideposts
Receives, investigates and resolves reports of damaged or missing signs
Interprets and implements instructions from drawings, work orders and applicable standards manuals
Assists with the enforcement of City ordinances and policies pertaining to traffic control
Operates a variety of heavy equipment with a high degree of proficiency, including but not limited to back hoe, dump truck, front end loader, and snow removal equipment
Performs difficult manual labor and technical troubleshooting under adverse physical and environmental conditions for extended periods of time
Plans and organizes field work as assigned; reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations
Provides construction support for infrastructure as assigned
Coordinates and communicates with other crews and utilities, vendors, contractors, and suppliers
Performs emergency snow and ice control operations
Maintains signs inventory spreadsheet and other records; maintains inventory of supplies and signs
Maintains timely and regular attendance
Other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
Signs and Markings Specialist I: one year of related public works experience
Signs and Markings Specialist II: three years of related public works experience
OR a combination of experience, education and training that would provide the level of knowledge and ability required
Knowledge of methods, materials and techniques commonly used in the installation and maintenance of non-electrical traffic control devices
Knowledge of applicable standards including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, WSDOT Sign Fabrication Manual and International Municipal Signal Association Signs and Markings Manual
Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, ordinances, regulations and guidelines relevant to assigned duties
Knowledge of occupational hazards of and safety precautions for field work
Knowledge of methods for troubleshooting and repair of relevant equipment
Knowledge of general mathematics
Ability to utilize maps
Ability to compile, prepare and maintain a variety of records, files and reports
Ability to perform heavy manual labor
Ability to respond to emergency calls during work hours, and during non-work to include nights, weekends and holidays
Ability to meet schedules and timelines
Ability to support and model the identified vision, values and behaviors of the organization
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines
Ability to operate a personal computer utilizing a variety of standard and specialist software
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Successful completion of a pre-employment background check is required
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test and subsequent random drug and alcohol tests
First Aid/CPR certification is required within twelve months of hire
Washington State Traffic Control Flagger's certification is required within twelve months of hire
Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CECSL) certificate is required within twelve months of hire
Preferred
Class A Washington State CDL is required within twelve months of hire for Signs and Markings Specialist I
IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician I certification is required within twelve months of hire for Signs and Markings Specialist I
Class A Washington State CDL is required at hire for Signs and Markings Specialist II
IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician II certification is required within twelve months of hire for Signs and Markings Specialist II
