Substance Use Disorder Counselor

Responsibilities
Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the twelve core counseling functions: screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, and consultation
Complete assessments, progress notes, reviews, terminations, reports, and all other record keeping in a professional and timely manner
Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication
Gather facts from several assessment tools and other informational sources before assessing the clients' diagnostic and treatment outcome
Determine the appropriate therapy, method and length of treatment for the client
Provide counseling through individual, group, and family sessions
Participate in Emergency Services for walk-in or call-in clients during traditional business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and by phone and mobile from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. weekdays and 24 hours on holidays and weekends
Perform outreach, follow up and act as a community liaison as needed and appropriate
Maintain confidentiality of information; adhering to agency, state, and federal policies
Utilize knowledge of state and federal policies in alcohol and other drug abuse and mental health while performing job duties
Work flexible hours to accommodate the needs of the client
Become trained to assess intoxicated drivers using the Wisconsin Assessment of the Impaired Driver, the Uniform Placement Criteria, and the Department of Transportation Driver’s Safety Plan
Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences as per AODA counselor certification and continuing education requirements
Attend counseling and administrative supervision
Additional duties and responsibilities as needed and assigned
Qualification
Required
A Bachelor's Degree in Counseling or related field from a four year college or university and at least one year of counseling experience
Education and/or training in chemical dependency
Have or obtain upon employment, the Wisconsin Substance Abuse Counselor-In training Certificate
Have or obtain within 42 months of hire a Substance Abuse Counselor certification from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services
Valid Driver's License, and access to an insured motor vehicle
Substance Abuse Counselor certification from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services
Ability to read and evaluate assessment information
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing to clients, co-workers, other human services personnel, treatment centers, courts, probation, parole, law enforcement, and the Department of Transportation
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral and diagram forms
