The City of Rochester is seeking an Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) Technician for its Rochester Public Utilities division. Responsibilities

Identify and resolve AMI system faults in the field, including the installation and repair of electric meters and communication-related components
Maintain and troubleshoot RF (radio frequency), cellular, or mesh networks used by the AMI system
Analyze and troubleshoot technical metering problems, including measuring and calibrating equipment, and adjust metering and AMI network issues for accurate customer billing
Analyze and address all daily reports on the AMI system's operation, performance, and connectivity using various electric meter applications, software, and databases
Coordinate with the AMI Operations Analysts to create and track work orders addressing alarms and events, hardware and network issues, meter replacements, and repairs
Install and maintain AMI communication equipment, including gateways, access points, and routers to ensure data is received timely and accurately by the headend, MDMS, and data lake
Support AMI system development, configuration and upgrades, including designing, building, and testing hardware and software
Perform or assist others in configuring, maintaining, and testing utility metering equipment and technology systems
Test and maintain various complex meter programs to ensure energy is metered to meet RPU rate requirements and comply with energy wholesaler reporting requirements
Provide technical input into the preparation and revision of RPU’s Electric Rules and Regulations
Recommend revisions and updates to customer records, equipment drawings, or GIS data
Collaborate with multiple utility staff to recommend improvements to work orders and work procedures, including mobile work management methods and meter information administration
Review solar application one-line drawings and site diagrams; perform pre-construction site investigations and coordinate with engineering and the DER coordinator
Provide technical assistance to solar contractors to ensure compliant installations
Collaborate with the Marketing and Energy Services department to investigate concerns and provide technical expertise in resolving customer inquiries
Provide technical assistance to other electric and water operating sections, technicians, customers, consultants, and contractors. Offer support and assistance during system disruptions and outages
Perform construction, maintenance, testing, calibration, programming, retrofitting, repair, installation, replacement, and upkeep of electric and water metering devices and related service equipment
Conduct electric service disconnects and reconnects
Ensure that all electric and water meter installations comply with the RPU Service Rules and Regulations
Install and remove temporary power quality measurement equipment at customer locations; analyze data and report findings
Address customer inquiries regarding RF interference, voltage issues, high bills, incorrect readings, stray voltage, and service investigations
Investigate electrical diversion cases
Complete electric metering and service functions such as calculating electric loads, measuring secondary current and voltage, and comparing service load checks to metered values
Inspect customers’ premises and electrical equipment to determine Service Assured eligibility and document damage for insurance claims
Perform and manage test results for Instrument Metering Accuracy Control (IMAC) and Electric Metering Accuracy Control (EMAC)
Read meter routes and interpret metering data; maintain and update metering records, including computerized files and power quality test results
Determine the type and size of meters and associated equipment for electric service installations
Repair, maintain, and support calibration requirements of RPU electronic testing equipment
Complete or assist with installing, removing, maintaining, and troubleshooting load management system devices
Coordinate and review the work activities of contractors and others related to utility metering
Organize daily activities with contractors and customers requesting RPU assistance related to scheduling
Conduct field checks to assess readiness and progress of contractors and job sites
Execute work coordination processes, including creating and closing job tickets and scheduling outages
Resolve unusual planning issues such as emergencies, resource limitations, or conflicting schedules
Suggest change-out recommendations for inadequate or outdated electric service equipment
Assist the supervisor in coordinating work with other sections regarding meter equipment
Demonstrate leadership in safety by enforcing safety practices and correcting unsafe behaviors or conditions
Oversee and provide on-the-job training to apprentices or other electrical workers. Provide written documentation as required
Properly operate, inspect, and maintain assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment. Promptly report damage or loss and prevent the use of defective equipment
Prepare written requisitions for Stores materials. Receive and account for all materials issued from Stores and removed from service
Attend various training courses, seminars, and meetings to develop technical skills, provide exceptional customer service, and enhance interpersonal and leadership skills
Responds to trouble and emergency after-hours callouts. Assists in emergencies to investigate downed wires, stand by downed wires as required, and aid contractors during an emergency restoration process
Perform other duties as assigned or necessary

Required

A high school diploma or equivalent GED and completion of an approved Meter Technician apprenticeship program, including associated exam
A high school diploma or equivalent G.E.D. and three 3 years' electrical experience
A high school diploma or equivalent G.E.D. and completion of a two-year electrical trade school program
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
Completion of RPU's Meter Technician apprenticeship program and associated exam, within four and one-half (4.5) years as a condition of continued employment
Valid driver's license

Preferred

Completion of an approved MN DOL metering apprenticeship
Licensed Master, Journey, or Maintenance Electrician
Associates degree in Electronic Technology, or in an area related to the electrical trades
Experience in single/polyphase electric revenue metering
Experience with reading and interpreting meter data and equipment
