Responsibilities
Provides legal research and writing assistance
Prepares bench memos
Assists with orders and opinions
Communicates with counsel regarding case management and procedural requirements
Serves as administrator of chambers
Regularly reviews and manages the active case docket
Supports the judge’s schedule and administrative requirements
Trains and assists the term law clerks
Coordinates with the Clerk of Court
Provides legal and procedural guidance to chambers staff
Qualification
Required
Law school graduate at the time of appointment
Strong academic credentials
Superior legal research and writing skills
Ability to work independently in a high-volume work environment
United States citizenship or lawful permanent residency actively seeking citizenship
Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) for payroll deposit is required
Background investigation (including references and criminal history) before an offer of employment
Submission of fingerprints for an FBI background check or other security clearance
Bar membership for JSP 12, 13, and 14 levels
One year of legal work experience for JSP 12 level
Two years of legal work experience for JSP 13 level
Three years of legal work experience for JSP 14 level with at least two years in the federal judiciary
Preferred
Prior federal or state clerkship experience
Prior experience practicing in the Eastern District of North Carolina
Law review and/or moot court membership
Standing within the top 10% of law school class
