Responsibilities

Use a computer-aided dispatch system, receive emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services. Determine the nature and location of the emergency; determine priorities, and dispatch police, fire, ambulance or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures. Receive and process 911 emergency calls, maintain contact with all units on assignment, maintain status and location of police and fire units
Answer non-emergency calls for assistance. Enter, update and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems. Maintain accurate, up-to-date files and logs
Receive requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, and provides pertinent data. Monitor several complex public safety radio frequencies. Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems
Relates effectively to those contacted in the course of work. Prepare reports as required. Use good judgment in making decisions, in emergency and routine situations. Perform other duties as required
Utilize multiple online systems to augment and enhance performance
Public safety dispatchers work shift assignments including weekends and holidays in a 24/7 operation

Required

High school diploma or GED
Must successfully complete the examination process
Must successfully complete all required certification training
Must be able to maintain all required certifications
Must obtain all required State of Connecticut and Fairfield County Regional Dispatch Center certifications within six months of hire and maintain certification throughout the course of this assignment with the Department
Ability to speak clearly and distinctly at all times and communicate information in a concise and accurate manner
Ability to multi-task, organize, prioritize and adapt to constantly changing situations, and effectively take appropriate action
Ability to operate computer-aided dispatch (CAD) equipment
Ability to work effectively and courteously with co-workers
Ability to maintain emotional control and work effectively during emergencies, crisis situations or extremely stressful conditions
Ability to memorize, retain, and accurately recall commonly used codes, procedures and call types
Ability to understand verbal instructions in the use of specialized equipment
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, exercising good judgment in the safeguarding of confidential or sensitive information
Ability to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy, at times during stressful situations
Ability to type at 40 net words per minute
Ability to accept and apply constructive criticism and critiques
Ability to assist persons and be courteous under all conditions, including callers who may be unreasonable, demanding, rude, unpleasant and uncooperative
Ability to adapt to changes in computer systems, procedures and working conditions
Ability to receive information from various transmissions, (e.g. telephone, radio, etc.) and transcribe information (e.g. numbers, letters, names and facts) from one source to another in a timely manner
Ability to effectively interpret a variety of maps and dispatch information to field personnel
Ability to accurately interpret and follow Department rules and guidelines, (e.g. Standard Operating Procedures, directives, memos)
Ability to develop, lead, and participate in team and work groups
Good general intelligence and emotional stability
