FT Student Support Services Retention Specialist (GRANT FUNDED)

Halifax Community College is seeking a FT Student Support Services Retention Specialist to assist the Director with the implementation of the SSS Work Plan and to monitor academic progress of participants. The role involves developing and maintaining student files, coordinating services for SSS participants, and overseeing the evaluation process to ensure effective program planning and evaluation.

Responsibilities

Leads the overall plan of operation, to include informing the institutional community about SSS, identifying and selecting participants, assessing students, assists in developing individual action plans, assigning services, monitoring participants' progress, and retaining and graduating students
Assists in coordinating services for SSS participants including, but not limited to: tutoring, course advisement, academic coaching, disability and career services, peer mentoring, personal counseling services, cultural enrichment activities, assistance in financial aid application and enrollment in four-year degree programs
Develops and refines methods for continuous monitoring of participant progress as well as timely follow-up (i.e. contact with participants & faculty to gain progress reports)
Oversees and assists with the maintenance and monitoring of recordkeeping to ensure an efficient system that facilitates program planning and evaluation and tracking of services to students
Ensures that Competitive Preference Priorities are reviewed annually, carried out and that personnel are appointed to assist in satisfying the objectives
Conducts and reports monthly data relative to research and planning necessary to facilitate program evaluation and reporting
Oversees and assists with the evaluation process, collects data for and submits information to the Director for the Annual Performance Report and other monthly reports
Provides outreach to participants who exhibit challenges that could cause withdrawals
Fosters relationship with faculty and staff in an effort to retain students
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of TRIO and institutional policies and procedures
Ensure that eligible TRIO and participants in pre-collegiate programs are seamlessly connected to SSS in an effort to advance the major goals of the program
Maintain a monthly calendar of events for the SSS program and ensure that the SSS website and other forms of social media are current (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) or appoint designee
Chaperone and monitor on and off-campus SSS and college-related events
Must be able to work evenings and weekends as necessary
Perform other duties as outlined by the Director of TRIO programs within the parameters of the U.S. Department of Education guidelines
Supervise SSS staff including a Lead Student Development Advisor, Student Development Advisor, and Peer Mentor(s)
Review advisor weekly plan of work and make recommendations as needed
Ensure that all staff requests for travel and purchases are properly documented and forwarded to the Director's office for review and signature in a timely manner
Ensure that all monthly reports (i.e. leave, mileage) are completed before moving to the Director's office
Consult with the Director regarding personnel matters concerning staff (i.e., extensive leave requests/absences, change in performance as it relates to job description, other matters of concern)
Serve as the SSS point of contact in the absence of the Director
Must maintain current knowledge of trends and new developments in federal TRIO programs
Must complete TRIO training workshops annually
Must receive required hours of professional development as indicated in HCC Personnel Manual
Serve on various College committees as assigned
Must be able to work in a college environment
Must demonstrate interpersonal skills applicable to working with diverse groups of employees, students, and patrons
Must provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers

Required

Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or other related field
Knowledge of TRiO programs and working with students who have overcome various barriers
Proficiency in the use of information technology, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
Must be flexible and able to work weekends and evenings as needed
