Responsibilities
Plans, coordinates, supervises, and participates in the work of an assigned crew in the repair, maintenance, or construction of municipal facilities and systems such as streets, utilities and drainage facilities, buildings and grounds, cemeteries, etc
Performs or assists in performing more difficult repair and construction tasks
Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions
Makes and adjusts work assignments; schedules work projects
Requisitions necessary equipment and materials; maintains inventory of materials and supplies
Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints
Ensures adherence to all safety requirements and policies
Assists with the recruitment and selection of department personnel; assigns, directs, trains and inspects the work of staff; rewards, disciplines, coaches, counsels and evaluates staff performance; develops staff schedules; recommends transfers, promotions, suspensions, terminations, and demotions
Supervises and participates in the operation of trucks, tractors, backhoes and other equipment in connection with assigned tasks
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in public works facilities maintenance, repair, and construction including some supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Possession of a valid commercial driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
May require possession of or ability to obtain specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment
Knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas and related construction, maintenance and repair procedures
Knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work
Skill in the use of equipment to which assigned
Understand and follow specific oral instructions
Perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions
Comprehend moderately detailed policies and procedures
Supervise the work of subordinates
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public
Ability to work on weekends and holidays, as well as rotating shifts during snow and natural emergencies
