Responsibilities
Responds to emergency calls as a medical unit attendant or driver, performs necessary rescue work in accordance with established protocols for Basic and Advanced Life Support; administers necessary emergency medical care requiring the use of suction units, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medications, and cardiac monitors/defibrillator/pacers, and performance of intubations/advanced airway management
Paramedic trained in approved programs, certified by the Board of Medical Examiners to perform medical actions, and function in an approved mobile intensive care program may do any of the following in accordance with protocols established by their sponsor hospital:
While at the scene of a medical emergency and confronted by a serious or life-threatening clinical situation, if continual approval has been provided by the sponsoring Medical Director: Establish an intravenous or intraosseous line in a peripheral vein and administer any intravenous solution approved by the Board of Medical Examiners for use by Paramedics; Obtain blood for laboratory analysis; Administer parenterally, orally, sublingual, or topically any of the drugs approved by the Board of Medical Examiners for use by Paramedics; Perform pulmonary ventilation by means of an endotracheal tube and/or perform cricothyrotomy for relief of upper airway obstruction; Perform defibrillation or cardioversion; Use gas-powered or hand-powered nebulizers; Decompress a tension pneumothorax by use of a catheter-flutter-valve device; Use positive end expiratory pressure respirators; Perform gastric suction by intubations; Perform external cardiac pacing; Administration of whole blood; Performs other duties as assigned
When confronted with a pulse-less non-breathing patient, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, and pulmonary ventilation by means of endotracheal tube and administer appropriate cardiac drugs prior to contacting the sponsor hospital
Establish an intravenous or intraosseous line in a peripheral vein and administer any intravenous solution approved by the Board of Medical Examiners for use by Paramedics prior to contacting the sponsor hospital
May perform any of the following procedures if allowed by the County Emergency Medical Services System in which they function: patient assessment; basic life support techniques in accordance with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross including airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; oxygen administration; hemorrhage control; treatment for shock; bandaging and dressing soft tissue injuries; splinting fractures and dislocations; treatment of injuries to the head, face, eye, neck, and spine; treatment of injuries to the chest, abdomen and genitalia; provision of basic life support for medical injuries; assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth; treatment of injuries as a result of exposure to heat and cold; treatment of burns; lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility; and extrication of patients from confined areas
Responds to non-emergency calls, such as requests to transport patients from hospitals to their homes or from a local medical facility to a specialized medical center
Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical technical work and in ambulance service and operation; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay
Inspects and tests ambulances and their emergency equipment, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes ambulance and equipment daily; ensures all equipment is in proper and good working order; makes routine adjustments, but reports other than minor defects for specialized attention
Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities
Provides assistance to members of volunteer emergency medical service organizations in County, as requested
Performs other duties as assigned

Qualification
Required
Graduation from high school or a GED is required
1 to 2 years of experience in advanced emergency medical service work
Equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Certification by the North Carolina Medical Examiners Board as a Paramedic
Completion of additional course work and certification to include, at a minimum, certification in cardiac care, pediatrics and trauma, as determined necessary by the EMS Director
Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license

Health Clinic – Available to all County employees and dependents covered under the medical insurance plan. Covered visits include ear infections, colds, first aid, physicals, and other acute care needs.
Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) – The medical plan offers alternative therapies such as acupuncture, hypnotherapy, massage therapy, yoga, and others. Specific requirements must be met for partial reimbursement - refer to the employee guide for more information.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) – Counseling services are available to all employees and dependents in the home. Services are provided in a private and confidential setting. The County provides coverage for the first five visits per year.
YMCA – No joining or monthly membership fees for eligible employees. Employees may opt to upgrade their membership to a family rate of $6.92 per pay period.
PureGrit Fitness – Discounted member fees for eligible employees with access to a weight room, unlimited classes, or a day pass.
Holidays – Twelve days of paid leave are provided throughout the year to eligible employees.
Sick Leave - Employees earn eight hours per month; EMS employees earn 11 hours per month.
Annual Leave – Employees earn prorated hours per month based upon years of service and hours worked.
Birth Month Leave: Employees will receive the equivalent hours of one regular workday added to their annual leave on the second day of their birth month.
Community Involvement Leave: Employees earn eight hours per calendar year, expiring on December 31.
Bereavement Leave: Employees are given 24 hours of paid leave to grieve the loss of an immediate family member.
Parental Leave: Eligible employees can request up to 6 weeks of paid leave per calendar year.
Discount Tickets– Discount tickets to various recreational venues including AMC Theaters, Carowinds, Tweetsie Railroad, Biltmore Estate, and others.
NC Local Government Retirement System – The Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System (LGERS) is a defined benefit plan. Full-time and eligible part-time employees are automatically enrolled in the system. Employees contribute a mandatory, fixed 6% on a pre-tax basis. An employee is considered vested after five years of contributory service.
Life Insurance – $12,500 of Life and AD&D at no cost to the employee. Additional coverage is available at employee expense.
Longevity - After five (5) years of continuous full-time County service, employees receive an annual lump sum payment of 1.5% of their salary during their anniversary month. Moving forward, the amount increases by .10 per year based upon years of service.
401k and 457 Deferred Compensation – Contributions are available as an employee option.
Tuition Reimbursement: Employees who have completed their initial probationary period are eligible to participate in the tuition reimbursement program of up to $1,000 per semester in qualified expenses.
