Teacher's Assistant (Part-time and Substitute)
The City of La Habra is seeking a part-time and/or substitute Teacher's Assistant for their Child Development Division. The role involves supporting the planning and implementation of developmentally appropriate curriculum for preschool and school-age children, ensuring a safe and positive learning environment.

Responsibilities
Assists with the planning, preparation, organizing, and implementing the program for preschool-age or school-age children by approved curriculum, applicable policies, and philosophy of the Child Development program
Teach, supervise, and monitor student progress
Supervises children in all activities, including indoors and outdoors, snack and meal times, field trips, emergencies, preschool toileting, and preparedness drills
Direct students' group activities as assigned; provide emotional support, a friendly attitude, and general guidance, and encourage their involvement in activities
Assist in preparing and maintaining a clean, safe, attractive, and positive learning environment, including inspecting facilities to ensure children's safety indoors and outdoors
Model and develop language and communication skills with students
Completes daily observations of students, documenting the students' learning
Administer routine first aid to students as needed
Participate in professional development and training as assigned; attend staff and other meetings as required
Participates in all Child Development community family events outside of typical work hours, parades, performances, etc
Perform related duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Copy of college transcripts showing Child Development units or class schedule printout is required and must be attached or a State of California Child Development Assistant Permit
Applicants must hold a Child Development Assistant Permit or higher
Accredited HERO program (including ROP) Completed certificate
Enrolled in 6 college units of Child Development, to obtain the Assistant permit
Pediatric First Aid and Pediatric CPR certification is required (30 days after employment)
Must pass California Community Care Licensing fingerprint clearance to work with children
Successful Completion of a criminal history background check
Obtain and maintain all certifications and educational requirements as established by state and federal guidelines, including CPR/First Aid certificate for infants and children
TB test; proof of current Influenza, Pertussis and MMR vaccination
Knowledge of child-development behavior characteristics of children ages 2.9 years – 12 years, related learning, emotional stages, and physical development
Knowledge of curriculum and lesson plan activities for teaching at a school-age level or preschool level
Knowledge of basic methods of instruction and safe practices in classroom activities
Knowledge of requirements of maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly classroom
Knowledge of student behavior management strategies and techniques
Knowledge of basic record-keeping and report preparation techniques
Knowledge of operation of personal computers and applicable software
Skills and abilities to communicate effectively orally and in writing; with children, their parents, and other staff in teaching, informing, and interacting
Skills and abilities to observe and recognize behaviors or conditions in children that may indicate special attention or referral
Skills and abilities to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and possess excellent customer service skills
Skills and abilities to assist in developing, organizing, and implementing approved curriculum for children in the Child Development program
Skills and abilities to observe and evaluate student learning
Skills and abilities to work independently with little direction and confidentially with discretion
Skills and abilities to operate office equipment, including a computer, tablet, and two-way radios
Preferred
Bilingual in English and Spanish highly desirable

Part-time employees are entitled to use accrued sick leave after 90 days of employment and are only permitted to use 40 hours of accrued sick leave time per year.
