Assistant Professor, Special Education
Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is seeking a dedicated and collaborative Education faculty member, with a commitment to excellence in teaching, professional activity, and service. The faculty member will prepare and teach Education courses and engage in curriculum development, advising, and community involvement.

Responsibilities
Create an effective, supportive learning environment for students regardless of delivery method
Promote development of critical thinking among students
Demonstrate incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught (hands-on and engaged activities)
Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment
Maintain a significant campus presence, responding to instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college, and community
Meet with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week in person or on-line
Teach courses consistent with department procedures, the appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description
Provide each student with a syllabus (paper or online) on the first day of class that complies with department procedures and CCO
Teach assigned classes during the required contact hours at the scheduled time and place
Be available to teach courses at times directed by academic needs of the program and availability of staffing pool
Use appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses
Actively participate in the update and production of new curriculum development and related activities as a contributing team member of the program area, department, campus, college, and state
Conduct a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance
Inform students of progress to date periodically and assign and submit grades by published deadlines
Provide appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments
Return graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards
Maintain student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades
Consistently improve course quality, design, and course integrity through participation in college-wide assessment of student learning
Maintain professional and collegial behavior as defined in the Faculty Handbook
Respond to voicemail and email communication promptly (generally within 1-2 contract days)
Meet all deadlines
Maintain professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure
Partner with the college to provide innovation and improve the learning environment
Collaborate with colleagues for instructional improvement
Coordinate and supervise field experience and Community-Engaged Learning projects, as assigned
Prepare and submit incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy
Maintain necessary educational credentials, professional skills, and demonstrated teaching competencies consistent with department standards
Expand knowledge in discipline and teaching craft on an ongoing basis
Complete required training and participate in professional development
Solicit feedback and implement suggestions from students and peers, when appropriate
Participate in collegial mentoring relationships, serving as mentor and/or mentee in the department and college
Promote professional development of peers/colleagues through recognized professional activities (in-service activities and the presentation of conference papers and/or publications, and other methodologies appropriate to the teaching field), as approved by the department
Engage in local, state, and/or national professional organizations appropriate to the faculty role
Serve community partners as content area experts, when needed
Provide service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and campus committee assignments
Offer adequate service on at least one department, school, or college-wide committee
Serve on tenure sitting committees for department colleagues, when appropriate
Attend Convocation, Professional Development Day, Commencement, and other institutional meetings (e.g., department meetings)
Promote, model, and exhibit the College Values with colleagues, students, and community stakeholders
Mentor new faculty as assigned
Provide leadership and instructional integrity through classroom observation, mentoring, and evaluation of part-time employees
Handle/respond to student concerns/complaints
Assume an active role in the student advising process, formal, and/or informal, per departmental guidelines
Meet with and update the advising office. Update and maintain advising materials per departmental guidelines
Review and recommend program textbooks and/or materials
Evaluate and revise program offerings/materials on an ongoing basis and develop new curricula, as needed
Participate in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives
Participate in strategic planning. Monitor the institutional effectiveness and accountability process
Know and enforce FERPA guidelines and other pertinent federal regulations
Assist in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment
Report maintenance issues for classrooms and equipment to appropriate authorities
Maintain inventory, if appropriate, of equipment, tools, supplies, storage/disposal of hazardous materials required for classes, and request appropriate equipment repair
Actively participate in the informed budget process
Identify budgetary needs and priorities within the program, as applicable
Participate in state-level issues, as requested
Qualification
Required
Master's degree in Special Education (or a master's degree in Elementary Education or Secondary Education with an endorsement in Special Education), from a regionally-accredited college or university
Professional Teaching License current within the past three years
Within the past 10 years, a minimum of three years of full-time salaried teaching experience in Special Education as a licensed teacher of record in a K-12 classroom. (Paraeducator, substitute teaching, and student teaching experiences do not count.)
Preferred
Ph.D. in Education from a regionally-accredited college or university
Professional Teaching License in Utah, current within the past three years
Within the past 10 years, four or more years of full-time salaried teaching experience in Special Education as a licensed teacher of record in a K-12 classroom. (Paraeducator, substitute teaching, and student teaching experiences do not count.) Preference will increase with each successive year beyond the minimum requirement
Experience teaching face-to-face and/or online courses at an accredited institution of higher education. Additional preference will be given to applicants with three or more years of full-time teaching experience or six years of part-time teaching experience
Experience providing Professional Development training to other educators
Experience teaching Research Methods and Design
Experience creating and implementing integrated curriculum in the classroom
Demonstrated effectiveness in reaching students of different backgrounds
Experience in facilitating undergraduate research
Experience in grant writing and grant management
Fluency in American Psychological Association (APA) formatting
