Associate, Tax Compliance & Strategy
Santa Barbara Management is a family office designed to enable exceptional builders and their families to thrive. The Associate on the Tax Compliance and Strategy team will support day-to-day client engagements, prepare complex tax returns, and engage with ultra-high-net-worth clients while developing technical and leadership skills in a supportive environment.
Responsibilities
Prepare individual, trust, and entity workpapers, including where applicable allocations, and supporting schedules for tax filings
Draft individual, trust, and entity tax returns with attention to accuracy and detail
Gather and organize financial data, investor information, and source documents from clients and advisors
Track investor-level tax attributes including residency, withholdings, and elections
Review draft returns for consistency with internal financial records and planning objectives
Prepare materials for client meetings and support senior team members on compliance and advisory projects
Maintain organized, audit-ready files with comprehensive documentation of tax positions and correspondence
Keep tax files, trackers, and estimate schedules current and consistently organized
Respond to IRS and state tax notices and coordinate resolution with external advisors
Support tax planning work specifically in the context of individual and family planning, trusts, private foundations, and charitable giving strategies
Communicate proactively with clients to manage expectations and meet deadlines
Flag technical issues and ask clarifying questions before sending work for partner or senior manager review
Use tax software effectively to track, analyze, and support filings
Recommend improvements to workflows, documentation standards, and internal processes
Qualification
Required
2+ years of relevant experience
Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to operate effectively in a lean, fast-moving environment
A desire to work in a performance oriented meritocracy that rewards entrepreneurial thinking, high quality work product, and that embraces a low-ego 'roll-up-your sleeves, no task is too small' mentality
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent project management and time management skills
Tax research skills
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Accounting preferred
CPA, JD, or EA preferred
