Responsibilities
Manage and direct the drafting, filing, prosecution, and maintenance of U.S. and non-U.S. patents by outside counsel to obtain high quality patents aligned with Universal’s patent program strategy. Draft patent applications as needed
Partner with advanced technology, engineering, and design groups to develop patent strategies and pursue patents on critical systems/technologies
Manage invention harvesting and evaluation processes. Provide patentability analysis and guidance
Provide training and guidance to Universal teams regarding Universal’s patent program, and technology-related IP and compliance issues
Monitor third party patents and commercial activity that may impact Universal. Support enforcement investigations and actions as needed. Support the review and analysis of Universal’s commercial activities to support clearance of patent infringement risks as needed
Manage Universal’s patent program docketing to ensure timely filing of applications, responses to patent office actions, and payment of maintenance fees for Universal’s patent portfolio
Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in engineering or other relevant technical area required
US Patent Bar required
4-7 years relevant patent preparation and prosecution experience in a law firm or in-house
Experience at US Patent and Trademark Office will be considered
Preferred
Mechanical or Electrical preferred; others considered
J.D. preferred
Member of a state bar preferred
Engineering experience preferred
