Responsibilities
Provide technical expertise and oversight to a Casualty Claims department directly handling complex casualty coverage issues, including general liability, auto, excess, and umbrella claims
Leads, directs and has full management accountability for Claims staff with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with corporate strategic direction
Collaborates with Underwriting, Risk Management, Actuarial, TPAs and other stakeholders to ensure knowledge sharing on market trends, legal changes, portfolio management and loss developments
Assist with development of Claims annual operational goals, objectives and budgets
Manage the Trial Committee process, including review of cases set for trial, development of resolution strategies, and oversight of reporting to Home Office
Oversee reserve reviews and ensure timely and accurate reserving practices for casualty claims
Conduct training sessions on current topics and facilitate both internal and external partnership calls to discuss issues of concern with Underwriting, Actuarial, Legal, and Risk Engineering teams
Partner with other business unit leadership to ensure consistency in process and quality claim handling across business units
Identify opportunities for loss cost reduction and support strategies that result in improved financial outcomes
Work on various claims-related projects as needed
Develop and implement strategies relative to coverage issues, including drafting and reviewing coverage position letters, retaining and directing coverage counsel, and reviewing counsel’s opinion letters and analysis
Maintain contact with associated claims carriers, business line leaders, underwriters, defense counsel, program managers, and brokers to communicate developments and outcomes as necessary
Analyze and direct risk transfer, additional insured issues, and contractual indemnity issues
Prepare and present written/oral reports to senior management setting forth all issues influencing evaluations and recommending reserves
Qualification
Required
Minimum of 12+ years of experience in the insurance industry handling coverage issues and casualty claims, including general liability, auto, excess, and umbrella
7+ years of demonstrated management experience leading a team of claims examiners in primary and excess
Licenses in multiple jurisdictions. Applicants must possess or obtain proper and active adjuster licensing in all applicable states within three months of hire
Demonstrated ability in analyzing, organizing and presenting information in a clear and succinct manner
Detailed technical knowledge of casualty claims handling with the ability to advise Claims Examiners on complex cases
Ability to analyze complex coverage issues and draft coverage disclaimers/Reservation of Rights letters
Casualty Claims Audit experience
Demonstrate strong executive presence with internal and external stakeholders
Hands-on experience and strong aptitude with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
Exceptional communication (written and verbal), evaluating, influencing, negotiating, listening, and interpersonal skills to effectively develop productive working relationships with internal/external peers and other professionals across organizational lines
Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical, organizational, and time management skills
Demonstrated ability in taking part in active strategic discussions
Demonstrated ability in working independently and in a team environment
Excellent presentation skills & ability to make decisions in a team-based environment
Willing and able to travel 15%
Role is hybrid and (2) days in office
