State Tax Manager | Compliance & Policy
Global Accounting Network is a leading energy company seeking an experienced tax professional to join its State Tax Planning & Compliance team. The role involves overseeing compliance, advising on planning and policy, and supporting M&A activity within a collaborative in-house tax department.

Responsibilities
Lead state income and franchise tax compliance efforts, including review and preparation of complex corporate and partnership filings across multiple jurisdictions
Conduct apportionment calculations and discrete event analysis for consolidated and standalone entities
Support the development and execution of state-level tax planning initiatives and policy positions
Collaborate with corporate teams on structuring and due diligence for acquisitions, divestitures, reorganizations, financings, and joint ventures, with a focus on maximizing tax efficiency
Provide technical expertise on the state tax implications of transactions, including modelling cash and GAAP impacts
Respond to state agency inquiries and audit requests; draft and support positions on complex tax issues
Work with internal teams to reconcile forecast-to-actual variances and return-to-provision differences
Manage and mentor one or more tax analysts; delegate effectively and ensure high-quality deliverables
Present complex data and tax matters clearly to leadership and other internal stakeholders
Conduct research and prepare written summaries on state income and franchise tax issues
Stay current with changes in state tax laws and regulations impacting the business
Maintain a high level of organization in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Qualification
Required
Minimum of 8 years' experience in state income/franchise tax compliance
Strong grasp of state apportionment rules and tax accounting principles
Leadership experience with a track record of mentoring or supervising staff
Advanced Excel skills; familiarity with tools like Alteryx or Power BI is a plus
Comfortable working independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines
Clear communication skills—both written and verbal—with the ability to explain complex tax topics
Ability to interpret and analyze large datasets and provide actionable insights
Preferred
Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation, or J.D
CPA designation
Membership in good standing with a U.S. state bar (if J.D.)
