Legal Clerk IV - SR-16

Responsibilities
Supervises and participates in providing a variety of legal clerical work in support of staff attorneys
Supervises the maintenance of case files and systems of legal records
Coordinates work of section with court personnel, other sections, and with other agencies
Determines work priorities and reassigns work to meet schedules, deadlines, or changing work requirements
Assigns legal clerk to assist attorneys
Prepares weekly schedule for staff attorneys for court appearances in Hilo and rural district courts
Prepares calendar of trial cases
Researches files and references to locate or abstract information needed for use in court by staff attorneys
Supervises and participates in inputting, updating, and retrieving information from case files, records, and computer-based information systems
Assists in establishing standard operating procedures and in developing new forms as required
Participates in drafting manuals and references on work methods and procedures
Provides orientation and training to subordinates and to new staff members
Participates in recommending personnel actions
Handles complaints referred by subordinates
Compiles and prepares periodic workload and status reports
May take and transcribe dictation
Qualification
Required
Graduation from high school
Four (4) years of progressively responsible legal clerical work experience involving the preparation, typing, and processing of a variety of legal forms and documents which required substantive knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms, and documents
Demonstrated supervisory aptitude
Possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing, as applicable to the position
Preferred
Legal Secretary or Paralegal Certificate from an accredited college or university may be substituted for six (6) months of the required legal clerical experience
An Associates degree or higher from an accredited college or university may be substituted for lack of the required legal clerical experience on a year for year basis
