Environmental Health Technician

Responsibilities
Direct and conduct the installation water quality surveillance program
MEDCEN consultant/advisor to the EOC Committee and Installation on all water quality and water protection issues as it relates to any potential for biological or chemical contamination of the water supply
Serve as the Laboratory Director and Quality Assurance Officer. Monitor performance standards for the quality control program and quality assurance programs, validate methods and procedures and evaluate data
Conduct and interpret blueprints review on all new construction projects on the installation to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
Develop and maintain hospital Hazardous Waste and Regulated Medical Waste program which includes training of hospital personnel
Conduct procurement and budget activities for the hospital’s Environmental Protection Funds
Report results of pest surveillance to installation pest control staff and other installation officials
Prepare letters of instruction, command informational letter, news articles and other educational materials
Train new Environmental Science Officers, Environmental Health NCOICs and 68S in processes, procedures, and regulations relating to Fort Wainwright and outlying areas
Qualification
Required
Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver's license
One year of specialized experience which includes conducting health sanitation surveys or investigations, identifying health hazards and providing training or educational materials to individuals
Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Environmental Health, Biology, Chemistry, Public Health, Public Health with a concentration in Environmental Health or related degree
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%
Experience may have been gained in work fields such as biological technician, medical technician, pest control technician, quality control positions with dairy or food service industries, or environmental health worker
Journey level experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was closely associated with and provided the required knowledge of environmental health techniques, methods, and skills
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation
A Personnel Security Investigation is required
Selectees may be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption
A pre-placement medical examination is required
Moderate to heavy lifting up to 60 pounds may be required
Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position

Federal employees in Alaska are currently entitled to receive a 1.49% COLA rate Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in addition to the base salary.
