The Backend Engineer will be responsible for building and maintaining production backend systems, ensuring reliability, and evolving data models while collaborating closely with the engineering team.

Responsibilities
Message ingest & delivery: own SMS/WhatsApp/email/voice infra, build webhook handler, manage retries, track delivery receipts/errors, and keep per-workspace rate limits
Workflow runner & scheduler: keep step execution reliable (retries/backoff), maintain time-based triggers, pause/resume jobs safely, and prevent duplicate runs
Inbox & threading: keep conversation threading correct across channels, maintain assignments/escalations/status transitions
API endpoints: maintain API for contacts, messages, workflows, tasks; enforce workspace auth, pagination, and request limits
Data model & migrations: write zero-downtime migrations; build backfill scripts with verification and rollback
External integrations: keep Stripe/PMS/CRM connectors healthy; add timeouts on outbound calls; handle third-party outages with safe fallbacks; monitor webhook failures with a DLQ
Logging, metrics, tracing: ship structured logs, basic request/queue timings, useful dashboards, and alerts tied to clear runbooks
Multi-service health: run a small monolith plus a few workers (messaging, workflow, media). Keep interface boundaries clear and clean
Monitoring & Analytics: Implement metrics, dashboards, and alerting to track application/infrastructure performance and spot issues early
Collaborative Architecture: Work closely with our frontend and AI engineers to integrate backend modules with the broader platform (Inbox, Workflows, Escalation Center, etc.)
Scaling: Ensure our AI infrastructure is built to handle growing data volumes and real-time interactions with minimal latency
Qualification
Required
Hands-on experience building production backend systems
Experience with message ingest & delivery including SMS/WhatsApp/email/voice infrastructure
Ability to build webhook handlers and manage retries
Experience tracking delivery receipts/errors and maintaining per-workspace rate limits
Experience with workflow runner & scheduler, ensuring reliable step execution
Ability to maintain time-based triggers and safely pause/resume jobs
Experience preventing duplicate runs in workflows
Ability to maintain conversation threading across channels
Experience maintaining assignments/escalations/status transitions
Ability to maintain API for contacts, messages, workflows, tasks
Experience enforcing workspace auth, pagination, and request limits
Ability to write zero-downtime migrations and build backfill scripts with verification and rollback
Experience keeping external integrations healthy (e.g., Stripe/PMS/CRM connectors)
Ability to handle third-party outages with safe fallbacks
Experience monitoring webhook failures with a DLQ
Ability to ship structured logs and create useful dashboards and alerts
Experience running a small monolith plus a few workers
Ability to keep interface boundaries clear and clean
Experience debugging with logs/metrics/traces
Ability to write clear design docs, migration plans, and runbooks
Ability to prefer simple fixes first, adding complexity only when required
