Responsibilities
Operate substantially all of the following: medium to heavy-sized equipment on a regular and recurring basis: asphalt roller, asphalt hotbox, dump truck, power broom, loader, personnel hoist, forklift, backhoe, sander, mower and snowplow
Perform pre-trip inspections and minor maintenance on assigned equipment
Must follow established policy and procedures in operating and inspecting all equipment
Assist in asphalt application or oiling tasks for roadway surfaces
May also remove loose material, pour asphalt, pour oil, spread sand or asphalt, and hand sweep gravel from areas to be patched
Perform activities in support of road maintenance functions: Clean and install culverts; clean shoulders and ditches; install and repair fencing, road signs, and guardrails; cut and remove brush; perform minor intermittent fabrication and welding repairs; serve as traffic flagger
Qualification
Required
Progressively responsible experience in the operation of medium-sized road maintenance equipment
Must possess a valid Oregon driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record
Requires Class A commercial driver's license with an air brake endorsement to regularly operate the full range of medium and heavy equipment
Within six months must possess traffic control, first aid, CPR certification and tanker endorsement
Thorough knowledge of the purpose and limitations of the full variety of light and medium equipment identified above as well as attachments
Knowledge of the practices and procedures used in road and pavement maintenance
Knowledge of safety rules to avoid injury to self and others or damage to equipment
Knowledge of traffic laws governing operation of motor vehicles and equipment on county roads
Skill in the operation of the full variety of light and medium road maintenance equipment noted above in a variety of terrains and weather conditions
Skill in performing minor equipment maintenance and limited repairs
Able to communicate effectively orally with other employees, contractors, vendors, and the public
Able to remain calm and use good judgment during confrontational or high-pressure situations that may arise in the course of public contact or unexpected worksite developments
Able to work in a team environment
Able to understand the scope of the work at hand and use initiative and judgment to complete assignments, resolve problems, and manage time effectively
