Responsibilities

Interact extensively with students while providing routine care for minor and acute illnesses and chronic disorders
Provide immediate care for accidents and injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening
Provide appropriate treatment of ill or injured persons
Establish and maintain an up-to-date electronic student health record system
Assist with efforts to ensure an adequate program for the prevention and control of communicable diseases
Encourage parents/guardians to follow through with recommended health care
Administer medications and perform specific treatments as ordered by a health care provider and delegated by the RN-School Health, observe for medication and treatment side effects and take further action as indicated
Perform lice screenings as directed by the RN-School Health
Communicate health-related information as appropriate (e.g. drug/alcohol situations, suicide threats, medication/treatment orders, pregnancy concerns, accidents, etc.)
Assist with follow-up of long-term absences
Assist with vision and hearing screenings and other health screening programs
Arrange appointments and take messages for the RN-School Health
Assist with record-keeping, report preparation and inventory of health supplies
Perform other related duties as required

Qualification

Required

High school graduation or the equivalent
Minimum age 18 years
Minimum 1 year of paid work experience (within the last 5 years) in either of the following areas: Working directly with children (pre-school age and/or school-age); and/or Providing direct service in a health related field
Current CNA certification issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing
Current certification in CPR and First Aid by a recognized certification body (e.g. American Red Cross, Heart Association, National Safety Council) or ability to become so certified during the orientation process
Strong math and clerical skills, with ability to accurately prepare and maintain health records and program documentation
Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills
Ability to effectively organize work, determine priorities and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision
Ability to work with sensitive and personal information and maintain appropriate confidentiality
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students, parents/guardians and the general public
Ability to effectively provide health care and services in compliance with MD laws, rules and regulations governing School Health
Ability to effectively access and utilize computerized systems to enter and maintain related data and statistics

Preferred

Pediatric healthcare experience in a hospital, pediatric clinic, community health or mental health setting
Current CMT certification issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing
