Public Works Inspector I

City of Garland is responsible for overseeing Public Works and private development construction. The Public Works Inspector I serves as the City’s field representative, providing quality assurance oversight on projects performed by the City and contractors.

Responsibilities

Provide quality assurance and quality control of public works construction performed by both city contractors and private development contractors
Conduct project management of City projects and contractors including becoming familiar with contractor’s CPM (critical path method) schedule while reviewing daily construction progress, identifying problems and recommending solutions
Maintain project documentation for city and private development projects and right-of way permitted work
Maintain storm water quality compliance with Federal, State and City requirements on both city and private projects
Coordinate and oversee activity in city right-of-way, easements and flood plains
Provide daily observation of jobsites for general compliance with OSHA requirements
May inspect right-of-ways and issue citations for violations
May review/approve Right of Way permits as required

Required

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
A minimum of 75 contact hours of technical training in inspection and public works construction
4 years related experience
Comprehensive knowledge of City, State, and Federal Codes and Specifications relative to Public Works Construction
Comprehensive knowledge of Federal & State requirements for Safety (OSHA), Accessibility and Pollution Control
Comprehensive knowledge of the Engineering Code of Ordinances
Comprehensive knowledge of Public Works construction means & methods
Comprehensive knowledge of construction scheduling and sequencing
Comprehensive knowledge of basic Quality Assurance & Control processes including specific material testing procedures
Skill in basic computer office software
Skill in high school level mathematics
Ability to read and interpret contracts, specifications and construction plans
Ability to learn new technologies, procedures and specifications
Ability to work effectively with people in order to accomplish project goals
Ability to maintain a broad perspective on projects and anticipate problems
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally
Ability to resolve conflicts in a professional manner
Valid Class C Texas driver's license

Preferred

6 months to 1 year advanced training past the high school level
4 to 6 years of experience in public works or building construction
