Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader
The James H. Quillen VA Medical Center is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader to work in the building maintenance and minor renovation unit. The role involves providing maintenance, minor renovation, and repair of equipment and facilities at Mountain Home and in the surrounding area.

Responsibilities
Serves as Maintenance Mechanic Leader and may provide maintenance, minor renovation, and repair of equipment and facilities at Mountain Home and in the Mountain Home catchment area
Performs trades work at the WG-10 journeyman level
Completes maintenance work orders that are approved by the unit Supervisor
Troubleshoots and performs repairs on various building systems as necessary to maintain normal clinic operations
Serves as the first responder to second shift calls from facility administration for engineering assistance
Independently triages, troubleshoots, and repairs, or calls in additional resources, as-necessary
Engineering assistance required can be of multiple trades, including, but not limited to, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC
Leads three or more workers to accomplish trades work alongside those employees led
Determines nature and extent of repairs required. Works with a variety of pipe and pipe fittings including those made of copper, brass, lead, glass and plastic
Installs, repairs, modifies, and completes preventive maintenance of most refrigeration equipment
Typical work assignments include the performance of visual examination and operational tests to determine the need for, and the performance of, repair work on a level of difficulty and responsibility, to include, but not be limited to, Maintenance Mechanic (Electronic/Electrical) WG-4749-10
Leads, and works alongside, employees engaged in the installation, maintenance, repair, and test of the following systems: Electrical distribution systems (high and low voltage) electrical/mechanical operated, dietetic equipment, electrical operated lifts, elevators and dumbwaiters, lighting systems, radio, nurse call public address and fire alarm systems, electrical heating equipment, office equipment, sight lighting systems, electrical operated doors and other electrically operated equipment. High and low pressure steam and condensate systems (steam heating, radiators, circulating pumps, etc.), Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and plumbing systems
Determines nature and extent of repairs required. Works with a variety of pipe and pipe fittings including those made of copper, brass, lead, glass and plastic. Installs, repairs, modifies, and completes preventive maintenance of most refrigeration equipment
Aligns pipes, valves and fittings to reassemble portions of systems requiring repairs or modifications. Braces and supports piping systems to control movement, expansion or contraction, and vibration. Locates source and determines cause of malfunctions
Uses shop mathematics and standard handbook formulas in computing dimensions for planning and laying out work. Makes standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment. Understands how to calculate and scribe patterns using parallel or radial line development
Estimates and drafts orders for supplies and materials for all assigned tasks and projects
Knows and implements accepted trade practices, processes, and procedures for all trades used on a project
Understands the purpose of relief valves, check valves, pressure reducing valves, shut off valves, expansion joints and similar devices and how these items control flow

Physical Requirements: Uses moderate physical effort and exertion in the process of stacking, loading, unloading, moving, and carrying tools, equipment, and materials ranging in weight from 10 lbs. to 50 lbs
Occasionally stands, stoops, bends, kneels, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Independently lifts large bulky and hard to grasp objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or lifts heavier objects properly, with the assistance of other workers or lifting devices
Occasionally works in tight places or uncomfortable positions for extended periods
Working Conditions: Works inside and outside and the jobs usually are dirty, dusty, and greasy
Occasionally performs work outside in bad weather and in work areas that are noisy
Occasionally performs work in unpleasant and disagreeable conditions
Occasionally works above ground level as well as underground in tunnels or in trenches
May be exposed to gases and fumes
Is frequently exposed to the possibility of abrasions, broken bones, burns, cuts, bruises, stocks and strains
May be exposed to metal cuttings from using drills, key cutting machines, and metal saws
Is exposed to the possibility of burns while using welding torches and soldering irons
Wears protective equipment such as goggles, safety glasses, welder's helmet, apron, gloves and safety shoes
May be required to wear uncomfortable protective clothing and equipment
