Responsibilities

Plans, schedules and promotes special activities, programs, and workshops for senior citizens
Supervises permanent part-time employees and coordinates the work of other volunteers and a Title V employee
Sponsors and conducts excursions and activities of special interest for seniors
Develops a working rapport with various senior citizen boards and community and state agencies and leaders for programmatic endeavors
Coordinates inter-agency efforts as they relate to older adult services
Recruits and trains community volunteers in recreational and educational activities for the senior citizens
Supervises all administrative functions to include personnel, budget, program planning and facilities use
Counsels and advises participants concerning educational, insurance, tax, and medical issues
Plans, schedules, and supervises activities, facility, supplies, and equipment
Establishes new and modifies existing facility rules and policies
Interprets and publicizes programs and activities of the center to the public through media and other means
Maintains Senior Center of Excellence; prepares and maintains all requirements to receive state appropriations grant

Required

Graduation from college or an university with a degree in recreation administration, gerontology, or related field and considerable experience working with senior citizens; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures and operate a computer and other offices machines, as well as determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned
Must be able to perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently and constantly to move objects
Valid North Carolina driver's license
Considerable knowledge of issues and life styles that affect senior citizens including a variety of recreation activities such as educational, social, medical, and nutritional activities that are suitable for senior citizens
Considerable knowledge of public policy issues relating to programs directed toward senior citizens and ability to convert those issues to easily understood written form; ability to develop supporting materials to be used by presenters in informational sessions for seniors
Considerable knowledge of techniques and methods used in instructing and directing senior citizens in special activities
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
Ability to efficiently use, or supervise the use of information technology including a variety of hardware and software to accomplish a variety of public information/communications, and record keeping as required in a senior center operation
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, community and state agencies, and the general public
Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others including staff and volunteers
Ability to work effectively, tactfully and courteously with the public and other governmental organizations
Ability to work extended schedules as needed to meet the requirements of service delivery in a senior center

Benefits

We offer the NC State Health Plan. The provider is Aetna Medical Insurance. Employee has the option to elect to purchase 80/20 or 70/30 plan.
Employees may choose from a variety of plans arranged through Sun Life, Mutual of Omaha and Aflac. These include Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity plans, Dental, and Vision plans. In addition we offer Short-term disability and FSA (Flex Spending Account).
The County provides $10,000 Basic Life insurance for employees. An employee may choose to purchase additional voluntary term life insurance.
We participate on the N.C. Local Government Employees' Retirement System. Employees are required to contribute 6% of gross wages toward their account.
401(k) and 457 are supplemental retirement plans administered by Prudential.
Employees accrue annual leave monthly and may use accrued leave upon approval after the probationary period is completed. Years of service transferred from eligible NC Governmental Agencies (written documentation required) and the employee’s work schedule are used to determine the rate of earning.
Employees earn fourteen (14) hours per calendar year. May use in increments of 15 minutes. Leave is pro-rated based as of date of hire in the first calendar year of employment. Petty leave must be used within the calendar year.
The County offers longevity pay to employees with 5 years of continuous service.
