Public Health Legal Fellowship

The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the health and well-being of New Yorkers. The Public Health Law Fellow will provide legal research and analysis on health-related issues, develop regulations and policies, and draft affidavits to support science-based policies.

Responsibilities

Provide legal research and analysis on a myriad of health-related issues including development of briefings to support redress relating to disparities and chronic disease
Analyze and develop regulations, legislation, and policy
Draft affidavits in support of science-based policies of DOHMH
Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor
Other duties as assigned to support the overall goals and mission of the department/ organization

Masters in Public HealthLaw DegreeLegal ResearchLegal WritingAnalytic SkillsExperience in Legal SettingUnderstanding Social DeterminantsInterest in Public HealthCommitment to Social JusticeCommunication SkillsSelf-Motivated

Required

Applicants must have both a masters in public health (MPH) and a law degree (JD)
In addition, the successful applicant will have demonstrated excellent legal research, writing, analytic, and communication skills
An interest in health care, public health, civil rights and social justice is essential
Applicants should be self-motivated and have the proven ability to work with a wide range of people

Preferred

Experience working in a legal setting
Ability to understand the concepts of social determinants of health, institutional racism, structural racism, health inequities and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities
Demonstrated commitment to supporting communities that have experienced systemic oppression and bias (e.g., people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, justice involved persons, etc.)
