Chair, Department of Cancer Data Science

Responsibilities
Provide inspiring and visionary leadership as Chair of the Department of Cancer Data Science which consists of forty-five faculty members with expertise in biostatistics, computational oncology, epidemiology, and related fields in population sciences, reporting jointly to the Chief Physician Executive and the Hospital President
Develop and execute a cohesive strategy that advances innovative quantitative methods and their translation across basic, translational, clinical, and population science
Champion the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence in all aspects of our mission discovery, education, and care delivery; serve as a key partner with senior leadership on institutional AI strategy and data governance
Strengthen and expand existing programs while building out new services, including informatics—through strategic recruitment, mentorship, and faculty development
Foster cross‑departmental and enterprise‑wide partnerships; leverage MSK’s unparalleled clinical, genomic, imaging, and pathology data assets to accelerate discovery and translational work that improves patient outcomes
Qualification
Required
PhD or MD/PhD in a relevant quantitative discipline
National/international recognition and accomplished leadership in data science fields relevant to cancer
5–7+ years of leadership experience in an academic medical center or cancer center; prior service as Chair/Section/Division Chief strongly preferred. Individuals with leadership experience in government or industry settings may also be considered
Proven ability to recruit, develop, and retain outstanding faculty; build high‑performing, inclusive teams; and grow multi‑investigator research programs
Track record of methodologic innovation and impactful scholarship; success securing federal, foundation, and/or industry funding
Exceptional communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills; highest standards of professional ethics and integrity
Strategic planning and program building across quantitative sciences research and clinical translation
Expertise in AI/ML development and/or application to oncology research and care delivery
Operational stewardship: budgeting, resource allocation, and research compliance
Faculty mentorship, talent development, and culture‑building across ranks and roles
Partnership development with internal/external stakeholders (e.g., SKI, clinical departments, data/IT leaders, federal agencies, foundations, and industry)
