Mission-Critical Mechanical Operations Manager - HPCC

Responsibilities
Direct and manage a department of mechanical SMEs and contracted service provider operators
Manage staffing plans, shift schedules, and escalation protocols to ensure 24/7/365 operational readiness
Promote training, cross-training, and professional development to maintain deep bench strength and reduce knowledge gaps
Ensure all team members maintain required regulatory and site-specific qualifications through recurring training, drills, and qualification programs
Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and technical excellence
Oversee day-to-day operation of HPCC mechanical systems, including chilled water plants, CRAHs/CRACs, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, and leak detection systems
Ensure efficient and reliable operation of HVAC and critical cooling systems to maintain required environmental conditions for IT load
Direct preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities to maximize uptime and system efficiency
Maintain and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs), system schematics, and operational logs
Ensure compliance with all Owner standards, OSHA, ASHRAE, and other applicable safety and performance codes
Direct implementation of lockout/tagout, confined space, and hazard communication programs for mechanical systems
Conduct routine system testing, water treatment programs, and performance audits
Lead root cause analyses and corrective action planning following equipment failures or environmental excursions
Manage integration of mechanical systems with electrical, controls, and IT loads to support mission-critical availability
Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure reliability of supporting systems
Ensure systems can support phased expansion and scalability of the HPCC
Provide oversight on operational changes, system optimizations, and outage coordination
Establish and monitor KPIs for mechanical reliability, safety performance, maintenance compliance, and incident response
Deliver regular operational reports to Owner leadership, including availability metrics and maintenance trends
Oversee vendor/contractor performance, ensuring SLA compliance and quality of service
Lead annual reviews of department performance, staffing needs, and system reliability
Collaborate with Operations, Controls, Electrical, and Security teams to support integrated site reliability
Drive continuous improvement in mechanical operations through technology upgrades, training, and process refinement
Participate in cross-functional planning for expansions, retrofits, and upgrades
Represent the Mechanical Department in Owner briefings, safety drills, and technical reviews
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Systems, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and substantial relevant experience
10+ years of progressive leadership in mechanical operations, HVAC, power generation, or mission-critical facilities
Strong knowledge of chilled water plants, cooling towers, CRAH/CRAC units, pumps, heat exchangers, and supporting infrastructure for mission-critical loads
Proven ability to lead and develop technical teams, including SMEs and contracted operators
Experience with regulatory compliance (OSHA, NFPA 70E, NERC, etc.) and mechanical safety management
