Responsibilities
Tap pipelines and install and repair valves, hydrants, meters, and pipes of all sizes which may or may not be under pressure
Measure, cut, thread, and fit pipes
Locate leaks and make repairs
Install, clean, and repair sewer lines, storm drains, and laterals
Clean and rod sewer lines
Install forms and pour and finish concrete
Operate motorized equipment including backhoe and loader
Operate trucks and other light power-driven and vibrating hand tools and equipment, including but not limited to jackhammers and whackers
Keep tools in clean and safe working condition
Maintain water and sewer operational records and charts
Take night, weekend, and holiday standby duty on rotational basis with other Department employees
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
One year of experience in water and sewer installation, maintenance, and repair, or related experience that would indicate possession of the above qualifications
Equivalent to high school graduation, in addition to any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to qualify for this position
Possession of a valid Class A California Driver's License or be capable of obtaining within six months of hire
State of California Water Distribution D-2 Certificate within one year from date of hire
Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in water and sewer system installation and repair
Knowledge of meters, valves, fittings, taps
Knowledge of operation of a variety of public works power driven equipment
Knowledge of safe work practices
Ability to perform a wide variety of skilled tasks in the installation, repair, and cleaning of sewer and water systems
Ability to operate motorized equipment including backhoe and loader
Ability to perform heavy manual labor and lift up to 94 pounds
Ability to operate trucks and other light power-driven and vibrating hand tools and equipment, including but not limited to jackhammers and whackers
Ability to work in trenches with mud and water as a result of broken water mains
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
Ability to tolerate changes in outside temperatures from winter to summer and tolerate dust, pollen, wind, and rain, with proper protection
Ability to work in confined areas, such as in manholes, deep trenches and tight holes
Ability to stand for periods of up to four hours at a time
Ability to walk on uneven or steep terrain
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Ability to work various shifts and flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
