Responsibilities

Perform system engineering, design engineering, project engineering, safety basis and nuclear criticality functions at LANL
Define requirements for nuclear facilities, nuclear safety systems, nuclear operations equipment, nuclear operations procedures, nuclear test and acceptance requirements and nuclear quality requirements
Integrate with programmatic, operations, maintenance, document control, project management personnel to ensure nuclear facility requirements are met
Support the LANL nuclear mission by implementing nuclear facility engineering regulatory requirements including the Nuclear Safety Management Rule, DOE Orders and Standards, American Nuclear Society Standards, national consensus Codes and Standards, recognized quality standards, Laboratory requirements, and federal, state, and local regulations
Identify and/or lead activities within a nuclear facility engineering discipline
Work independently and as part of a team
Apply broad and diversified knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and practices in the preparation of nuclear facility engineering deliverables
Utilize nuclear engineering technology to accomplish work and continuously improve work processes to meet customer needs

Required

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university
Minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3
Minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4
Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience as an electrical engineer at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in low voltage and I&C systems
Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in the design, maintenance, and operation of low voltage and I&C systems
Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in the application of codes and standards in a highly regulated work environment, to include but not limited to the IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical issues to a broad audience
Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience with performing analysis and calculations required to support engineered solutions
Ability to work independently with minimum guidance for assigned tasks and effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with management, customers, peers, and craft personnel
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks requiring varying resource needs and deadlines
Demonstrated ability working collaboratively, including participating in the implementation and commissioning of new techniques and unconventional methods related to system engineering
Advanced knowledge of and experience providing solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex problems through the application of technology aided engineering tools such as CAD, CNC, CAE, etc
Proven ability to program and develop unique software analysis tools to resolve complex issues
Demonstrated knowledge of safety issues or potential hazards relating to nuclear or industrial facility operation systems and devices and the use of design features to mitigate risks and hazards
Demonstrated ability to define deliverable and/or lead projects related to safety
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel and customers
Experience providing technical direction, mentoring, coordinating/monitoring the work of others, and serving as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership
Extensive knowledge and experience in nuclear facility engineering processes, maintenance techniques, work planning and control development, Quality, Safety Basis and other Nuclear Facility safety management programs
Demonstrated experience working with industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the nuclear facility engineering discipline
Expert knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and procedures, guides, and administrative practices
Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in preparing and reviewing technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems
Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in defining and collecting metrics on the usage, process, safety, and other parameters of interest for the structure, system, or components
Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in defining or establishing design or analysis tasks and prepare design concepts that meet both the regulatory and performance requirements for systems and equipment
Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in developing design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable
Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in evaluating and trending system health
Demonstrated ability to interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design as the Electrical SME
Demonstrated ability to mentor engineering interns and other engineers
Advanced knowledge of and experience contributing as a leader in engineering, through the proven ability to integrate and coordinate multi-facility deployed, cross-functional technical work activities
Experience in leadership as demonstrated through the proven ability to meet deliverables for senior management and lead projects while enhancing the technical and professional skills of junior engineers through active mentoring and training

Preferred

Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired
Professional Engineer License in Electrical discipline is desired
Demonstrated extensive knowledge and application of DOE Orders and Standards
Demonstrated extensive knowledge and application of the engineering design process
Demonstrated extensive knowledge and application of facility / systems engineering processes
Demonstrated extensive knowledge and application of design development and execution processes
