Start in 2026 SummerThe Neighborhood Defender Service is building a community‐based public defense office in Wayne County, seeking dedicated individuals for their summer law internship program in 2026. Interns will assist attorneys in various legal tasks, gaining valuable experience in criminal defense while contributing to the holistic representation of clients.

Responsibilities
Legal research as well as legal writing including memorandums, briefs, and mitigation work
Discovery and file review
Shadowing attorneys in court, during investigation, and at client meetings
Conducting appropriate court hearings and client interviews with supervision
Attending and participating in various training and office events
Qualification
Required
Is in good standing at an ABA accredited Law School having completed at least their first year
Is self-motivated and dedicated
Is passionate about issues in criminal and racial justice
Preferred
Rising 3Ls are strongly encouraged to apply
Applicants with previous criminal defense or criminal justice experience are encouraged to apply
Bi-lingual (Spanish or Arabic) individuals are encouraged to apply
