Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2/3 (Electrical Engineer)
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. They are seeking an Electrical Engineer to support their mission by providing technical expertise in electrical engineering for nuclear facilities, ensuring safety and reliability in critical power systems. The role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive design solutions and may include responsibilities at both Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 and 3 levels depending on the candidate's experience.

Responsibilities
Support LANL's mission by contributing technical expertise in electrical engineering for nuclear facilities
Assist in ensuring electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, and critical power reliability within and around the plutonium facility
Support projects involving facility modifications, new equipment installations, and infrastructure development
Perform engineering studies such as short-circuit analysis, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting design, fault current calculations, and arc flash assessments for both medium- and low-voltage systems
Support demolition, installation, upgrade, and repair activities
Collaborate closely with senior engineers and professionals across multiple disciplines, including fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, to deliver integrated, full-system design solutions
Qualification
Required
Knowledge of engineering design, planning, construction, and project or process management practices
Experience assisting in the preparation of technical reports and studies to establish and maintain the technical baseline for new and existing facility systems
Experience collecting and documenting usage, process, safety, and other performance parameters for structures, systems, or components
Experience supporting design or analysis tasks and developing design concepts that meet defined requirements
Experience preparing design details, calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate applicable design standards and requirements
Experience assisting with system health evaluations and trending analyses
Experience coordinating and interfacing with other engineering disciplines and customers throughout design development
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
Advanced knowledge and demonstrated technical experience in the design, maintenance, and operation of low-voltage and instrumentation and control (I&C) systems
Proven ability to apply and interpret engineering codes and standards in regulated environments, including IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA 70, and NFPA 70E
Advanced skill in performing engineering analyses and calculations to develop and justify engineered solutions
Ability to communicate complex technical issues effectively to varied audiences, including management, customers, and technical peers
Demonstrated capability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and projects with varying priorities and deadlines
Demonstrated success leading and contributing to multidisciplinary teams in implementing new or unconventional engineering approaches
Ability to organize, prioritize, and deliver results under tight schedules while effectively networking across organizations and functional areas
Advanced experience applying technology-aided engineering tools (e.g., CAD, CAE, CNC) to develop complex design solutions
Proven ability to program or develop analytical tools to resolve unique or complex engineering problems
In-depth understanding of safety issues and potential hazards related to nuclear or industrial facility operations, including applying engineered design features to mitigate risk
Ability to define deliverables and lead safety-related engineering projects
Demonstrated effectiveness in mentoring, providing technical direction, and coordinating the work of others
Proven ability to serve as a role model for professional integrity, creativity, and technical excellence
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above

Preferred
Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable
Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable
Demonstrated proficiency in electrical equipment replacement/selection
Demonstrated proficiency in electrical safety PPE use or selection
Demonstrated proficiency in National Electric Code (NEC)
Demonstrated proficiency in drafting (AUTOCAD)
