TERM INSTRUCTOR - COMPUTER SCIENCE/INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY POOL
Del Mar College is seeking a Term Instructor for their Computer Science and Information Technology department. The role involves teaching assigned courses, including online and dual-credit classes, while accommodating diverse student needs and maintaining a supportive classroom environment.
Responsibilities
Teach courses per regular semester that could include online courses and/or dual-credit/early college classes as needed by department
Teach assigned courses in a variety of times and locations in response to institutional need
Provide students with a written and accessible course syllabus that follows the Course Syllabus Guidelines and facilitates a clear understanding between student and instructor of the content, goals, requirements, expectations, evaluation methods and schedule of work
Maintain a classroom environment that promotes teaching and learning
Hold scheduled, posted virtual or physical office hours of at least one (1) hour daily and be available for and encourage conferences with students so there is a clearer understanding of the students’ work and the possibility of improvement
Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course outcomes within the College grade and grade appeals procedures
Review, evaluate, recommend, and effectively use student learning materials
Assist in academic advising of declared majors
Make continuous efforts to advance the quality of instruction
Develop and use a variety of teaching methods and materials to assist students who have differing educational and experiential backgrounds in meeting the course outcomes
Review, evaluate, and revise assessments of program and institutional student learning outcomes and program practices to bring about action plans devised to implement systemic improvement in programs and assure compliance with professional standards, state-mandated guidelines, and requirements of business/industry and higher education
Participate in the self-evaluation process
Establish goals and objectives which may include personal and professional development plans in consultation with the department chair
Maintain professional standards of competence in the discipline and teaching methodology through professional development/engagement activities
Maintain appropriate professional relationships with students, colleagues and the community
Assist with marketing programs and recruiting students
Serve on committees
Accept special assignments occasionally
Participate in scheduled institutional activities which include convocation and graduation ceremonies
Participate in department, divisional, and College meetings
Participate in College-related activities such as registration and selection of faculty
Participate in activities required to maintain program and College accreditation standards
Participate in the College planning process by assisting in the formulation of goals and objectives and budget priorities
Meet professional assignments in accordance with the College calendar
Participate in business and/or community activities that promote the mission of the College
Other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Ability to plan course instruction based upon approved syllabus/ outline provided to insure course content and objectives are met
Ability to utilize a variety of teaching styles and methods to accommodate diverse learning styles of students
Successful College Teaching Experience Is Required
Successful experience utilizing instructional technologies, including computers, internet resources and other appropriate media in instruction
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with students, faculty, staff, and public
Ability to develop and assess student learning outcomes
Master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Computer Science
Preferred
Demonstrate skill, knowledge, and abilities in the teaching discipline
Ability to teach and communicate with students of varied multicultural backgrounds
Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and methods which enhance student success
Knowledge of a learning college and/or knowledge of learning communities
Experience teaching college level online courses and/or documented successful training in a college online learning management system (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas)
Strong programming, information security, and networking background
Post-secondary teaching and/or industry experience in programming, networking, server administration, information security or digital forensics fields
Experience with virtual computing
Experience in recruiting and outreach activities
