SHS-RISK MANAGER

University of Michigan Health-Sparrow is a healthcare organization seeking a Clinical Risk Manager to oversee the Clinical Risk Management program. Responsibilities

Communicates, monitors and evaluates Clinical Risk Management program and activities to motivate others to achieve Clinical Risk Management goals
Develops and maintains systems to track, analyze and report occurrences and makes recommendations regarding prevention strategies based on this information
Investigates and analyzes patient care issues, concerns and event, including medical record review, staff interviews, workup of potential and actual professional liability claims incorporating the principles of the Michigan Model for early claims resolution
Presents investigative findings to relevant operational and medical staff leadership
Participates in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) meetings for identified events to understand root cause(s) and corrective actions(s) developed
Prepares professional, thorough written communication with patients, families, and caregivers in accordance with regulatory and legal guidelines/timelines
Maintains an atmosphere that supports and ensures continual dedication toward identification and reduction of clinical risk and improved quality of care throughout the Health System
Develops, coordinates and implements professional education and training programs relative to Clinical Risk Management, medical malpractice claims, and other relevant topics on a routine basis
Maintains and facilitates communication between Clinical Risk Management with outside vendors, insurance company representatives, attorney, and other relevant individuals as appropriate
Addresses and follows up on grievance, complaints and concerns related to patient and family clinical care concerns
Facilitates meetings and disclosure conversations and other communications with patients, families, and their representatives
Provides 24/7 Clinical Risk Management on-call support including weekends and holidays, on a rotating basis to respond to issues, concerns, phone calls, and serious adverse events that occur outside of normal business hours
Assists in developing and reviewing departmental and administrative policies and procedures
Serves on, and prepares reports for, Hospital and Health System committees, as assigned
Clearly communicates the mission, vision, and values of Sparrow Health System to all Caregivers
Conducts investigations assigned by and under the direction of the Administrative Director of Clinical Risk Management
Refers cases, as appropriate, to the professional staff peer review process
Assists in the carrying out of administrative responsibilities of the department, including budget, preparation and monitoring, assessment of workflow and reporting requirements, etc
Performs other related duties, as assigned by the Administrative Director of Clinical Risk Management

Required

Healthcare professions requiring licensure in the State of Michigan, must have and maintain current licensure
Bachelors degree in Nursing or Health Care related field and a minimum of 4 years in healthcare environment in one of the following areas: patient care, healthcare risk management, patient safety, healthcare claims management, or healthcare leadership; OR Associate's degree in Nursing or Health Care related field and a minimum of 6 years in healthcare environment in one of the following areas: patient care, healthcare risk management, patient safety, healthcare claims management, process improvement, or quality improvement; OR High School diploma and minimum of 8 years in healthcare environment in one of the following areas: patient care, healthcare risk management, patient safety, healthcare claims management, process improvement or quality
Excellent analytical and oral/written communication skills
Ability to work in both a team environment and independently
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and projects simultaneously with on-call duties and critical event management/support
Outstanding interpersonal communication and written skills
Ability to speak effectively with unfamiliar, upset or angry patients, families, customers
Excellent listening and problem-solving skills
Demonstrates ability in word processing, spreadsheets, and data input. (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel)
Familiar with hospital operations, professional and general liability risk issues and professional standards of practice to serve as a resource for staff and physicians
Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job

Preferred

Registered Nurse
Healthcare Risk Management certification
Experience as high-level nurse, physician assistant or other health care professional with clinical knowledge of health care delivery and factors that influence the level of care provided
Experience in Risk Management or dealing with medical/legal issues
