Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1/2 (Mechanical Engineer)

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. They are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support nuclear facility system engineering, including design support for renovations and new structures, as well as conducting engineering studies and ensuring system reliability.

Responsibilities

Serve as subject matter experts in nuclear facility system engineering
Conduct a variety of engineering studies such as equipment sizing, equipment reliability, alternative equipment selection, as well as work related to demolition, installation, upgrades, and repairs
Gain expertise in areas including pressure safety, electrical safety, leak testing, piping supports, flow requirements, and equipment installation using housekeeping pads or skids with post-installed anchors
Support designs using approved administrative procedures and computer software (AUTOCAD, MATLAB, etc.)
Work alongside junior and senior engineers to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring and leadership
Prepare and review technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems
Define and collect the usage, process, safety, and other requirements for the structure, system, or component design or analysis tasks, and prepare design concepts that meet the requirements
Develop design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable
Evaluate and trend system health
Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design as the Mechanical SME
Mentor engineering interns and other engineers

Required

Knowledge with major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in facility related systems (i.e. HVAC, Compressed Air)
Knowledge of design, operation, and maintenance of facility related mechanical systems
Knowledge of trouble shooting mechanical systems
Demonstrated experience in application of codes and standards in a highly regulated work environment, to include but not limited to the IBC, IEBC, ASHRE, B31
Demonstrated ability to perform analysis and calculations required to support engineered solutions
Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with management, customers, peers, and maintenance personnel
Demonstrated ability to prepare and review technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems
Demonstrated ability to define and collect the usage, process, safety, and other requirements for the structure, system, or component design or analysis tasks, and prepare design concepts that meet the requirements

Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 1 year's practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above

Preferred

Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable
Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired
Demonstrated proficiency in equipment maintenance
Demonstrated proficiency in equipment design
Demonstrated proficiency in drafting (AUTOCAD)
