Psychiatry Research Program Director

Responsibilities

Provide senior-level support to the research operations of the lab and/or department, including research staff recruitment and on-boarding, academic partnerships and grant programs, research operations including management of major data use agreements, oversight of educational and trainee programs, development and maintenance of standard operating procedures, and research facilities planning. Manage research programs and agreements liaising with collaborative parties, including BIDMC Research Management, intra and interinstitutional collaborators, external funding organizations including foundations, philanthropic groups and industry. (essential)
Develop budgets for both grant and industry applications. Ensures that program funds and properties are properly administered and protected; develop additional & alternative funding sources, including proposal preparation; maintain positive relationships with funding sources; negotiate contracts & monitor contract performance. Support management in all matters related to human resources, including faculty, fellowships and trainees and full and part-time staff; coordinate the recruitment process for clinical and research faculty, including credentialing and physician/fellow appointments; oversee the fellowship and other medical education training programs. Manage facilities, space and associated logistics, including renovations and expansion planning; manage onboarding, annual performance reviews, training plans and integration into centers' environment (essential)
Oversee calendar of activities planned to net optimal exposure for PR and Development, including regular research seminars; work in partnership with the Director and Chief to establish 5-year plan to become the preeminent translational research center nationwide. (essential)
Develop program-specific performance measures to assess effectiveness and success of program components; implement data collection processes and communicates performance through periodic reports to working and executive groups. (essential)
Participate in planning and implementation of the Program's goals, program objectives, personnel, resources and equipment; assists in the implementation of research studies if necessary; implement appropriate office systems, policies and procedures to assure uniform practice; manage and ensure effective operations for the lab and/or department. Serve as principal resource on all department financial matters; advise on availability and use of funds including special purpose funds; authorize all expenditures and assign them to appropriate budget or fund with approval from the Director. (essential)

Required

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
8-10 years relative work experience required, including 3-5 years supervisory/management experience
Ability to operationalize the establishment and growth of research programs
Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases
Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by precedents, policies and objectives. Regularly makes decisions and recommendations on issues affecting a department or functional area
Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents
Independence of Action: Ability to set goals and priorities for functional area. May make recommendations for department policies, practices and programs. Manager or Director provides broad guidance and overall direction
Written Communications: Ability to communicate complex information in English effectively in writing to all levels of staff, management and external customers across functional areas

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations
Teamwork: Ability to lead collaborative teams for larger projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have implications for the management and operations of multiple areas of the organization
Customer Service: Ability to lead operational initiatives to meet or exceed customer service standards and expectations in assigned unit(s) and/or across multiple areas in a timely and respectful manner
Physical Nature of the Job: Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling objects. Sitting most of the time, with walking and standing required only occasionally
