Penn State University is seeking a part-time research support assistant to assist in laboratory, greenhouse, and field-based plant genetic research. The role involves supporting the maize genetics program, conducting various lab tasks, and coordinating field activities across multiple growing seasons.

Responsibilities

Provide assistance to Dr. Ruairidh Sawers and his work group in performing laboratory, greenhouse and field-based plant genetic research

Support the Sawers group maize genetics program

Perform a range of standard lab tasks

Conduct seed inventory

Prepare material for planting in greenhouse and both local and off-site field nurseries

Conduct controlled pollinations in the field/greenhouse

Harvest and seed sorting

Prepare and conduct greenhouse experiments

Collect data

Coordinate field activities across multiple growing seasons

Track thousands of seed entries every year

Communicate with group members in the context of lab management and progress in wet lab procedures

Ability to work semi-independently under general supervision

Perform a range of standard lab tasks

Support the Sawers group maize genetics program

Duties include seed inventory, preparation of material for planting, conducting controlled pollinations, harvest, and seed sorting

Prepare and conduct greenhouse experiments and collect data

Possess organizational and communication skills to coordinate field activities across multiple growing seasons

Track thousands of seed entries every year involving several collaborators and personnel

Working knowledge of molecular biology for effective communication with group members

Basic computer skills, including use of shared database and spreadsheet platforms

Sound organizational skills and a professional working attitude

Successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies

Valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check
