Research Director (GME) - Director of Scholarly Inquiry
Henry Ford Health is seeking a Director of Scholarly Inquiry to provide strategic leadership and oversight for research activities conducted by residents, fellows, and faculty. The role involves ensuring compliance with research standards and fostering a culture of inquiry and academic rigor within the Graduate Medical Education enterprise.

Responsibilities
Provide vision and leadership for the Scholarly Inquiry Program to advance the research mission of GME and the institution
Oversee development, implementation, and evaluation of resident and fellow scholarly activity requirements
Collaborate with program directors, faculty mentors, and institutional offices to enhance research quality, mentorship, and productivity
Ensure equitable access to research support and resources for all trainees
Lead regular meetings, workshops, and educational sessions to promote research literacy and professional scholarship
Serve as the primary liaison for all human subjects research conducted by trainees and faculty under GME programs
Provide guidance on study design, IRB submission, and regulatory compliance with federal and institutional policies
Ensure adherence to ethical standards, informed consent processes, and human subjects protection principles
Coordinate with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) to facilitate efficient review and approval of research protocols
Conduct or coordinate training on responsible conduct of research, IRB procedures, and ethical issues in human research
Provide leadership and oversight for animal research activities conducted within GME programs
Ensure all animal research complies with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) regulations and ethical guidelines
Support trainees and faculty in protocol development, IACUC submissions, amendments, and continuing reviews
Collaborate with the Office of Research and animal facility leadership to maintain high standards of animal welfare and compliance
Mentor residents, fellows, and faculty in developing scholarly projects, including study design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation
Facilitate connections between trainees and faculty mentors with relevant research interests or expertise
Support academic writing, presentation preparation, and submission to peer-reviewed journals or conferences
Develop and deliver educational sessions on research methodology, ethics, and statistical literacy
Monitor compliance with institutional research policies and accreditation requirements related to trainee scholarship
Maintain records of trainee scholarly activities, presentations, and publications
Collaborate with the DIO and GME Office to prepare reports for ACGME, institutional committees, and accrediting bodies
Conduct or oversee periodic assessments of the research climate and effectiveness of the Scholarly Inquiry Program
Promote continuous quality improvement in research education and oversight
Qualification
Required
Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DO, or equivalent) required
Demonstrated experience in biomedical, clinical, or translational research
Familiarity with human subjects protection regulations (IRB) and animal research oversight (IACUC)
Prior experience mentoring residents, fellows, or medical students in scholarly work
Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills
Commitment to promoting professionalism, inclusivity, and ethical research practices
