Registered Respiratory Therapist
USAJOBS is seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) for the Pulmonary section within the Hospital and Specialty Medicine Division. The RRT will provide care for ICU and inpatient veterans, performing various respiratory therapy procedures and collaborating with the care team.

Responsibilities
Perform the following procedures with proficiency and confidence under minimal supervision: Oxygen, aerosol, humidity, and positive pressure breathing therapy; Implement adult mechanical ventilation using the PB980, LTV 1000/1200, Astral and other ventilators; Maintain, adjust, and monitor patients on a ventilator; Wean long-term ventilator patients; Performs weaning parameters on patients being weaned off a ventilator( Following the Ventilator Liberation protocol ); Implement Acute and Chronic NIPPV set-up and use(Respironics V60, Home NIPPV devices CPAP, Auto CPAP, BIPAP, Auto Bi pap; Implement HHFNC (Heated High Flow Nasal Cannula) therapy
Incumbent will read and review the patient's chart and evaluate physician's orders for respiratory therapy
Position patient and perform chest physiotherapy and postural drainage therapy/positioning, noting effectiveness of therapy or perform Flutter Value
Administer aerosolized medications as prescribed in the physician's order while following hospital policy regarding the administration of medication(s) (BCMA)
Perform Arterial Blood gas analysis by: Performing an Arterial Blood Gas draw to obtain blood specimen from Radial or Brachial artery; Must have basic understanding of blood gas and acid base interpretation; Consult with superiors and/or physicians on blood gas results and make recommendations for best course of action for the patient. Respond to emergencies, make assessments, and implement proper actions and judgments
Perform bedside pulmonary function testing as required
Assist in and performs minor and preventative maintenance of department equipment, when necessary
Prepare departmental requisitions, charges, and other paperwork that pertains to the department
May be called upon to aid in the evaluation of new equipment and supplies
Perform all Respiratory Therapy tasks using aseptic techniques/universal precautions to provide best care available to the patient

Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Citizen of the United States (U.S.). Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens
Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor
Licensure. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT
Credential. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT
Physical Standards. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019, Employee Occupational Health Service for requirements
English Language Proficiency. RTs/RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f)
Experience. None beyond the basic requirements
Education and Licensure. This level assignment is designated as temporary under paragraph 4d(1) above for individuals who have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor, acquired the CRT credential, licensed by their state and are working towards obtaining RRT credential
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the requirements above, candidates must demonstrate all the following KSAs: Ability to perform therapeutic modalities related to respiratory care; Skill in analyzing physiological specimens obtained to include arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, End tidal Co2 (ETCo2) monitoring, basic spirometry and other basic diagnostic procedures; Ability to collaboratively consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals for respiratory care to help provide favorable patient outcomes; Skill in assessing oxygenation and ventilation; Ability to perform basic airway management to include artificial airways and mechanical ventilation
Experience or Education, Licensure and Credential. Candidates must have: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level; OR A Master of Science degree in respiratory care AND a license AND an RRT credential
Preferred
2 years of ICU experience
Bachelor of Science in respiratory care
Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) certified
