Recreation Assistant (Human Performance)
USAJOBS is seeking a Recreation Assistant for the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Forces Branch in San Diego, CA. The incumbent will assist in supporting military readiness and resiliency through the delivery of health programs and structured fitness activities.

Responsibilities
Leads structured group activities, recreation, and performance related activities
Provides fitness orientations on proper movement mechanics and safe equipment use
Assists in delivering programs that promote resilience, recovery, and overall well-being
Works with patrons to achieve fitness and wellness goals
Uses practical knowledge of fundamental fitness techniques and procedures in providing fitness guidance
Develops and implements standard fitness plans to meet the individual needs of patrons
Observes patron fitness movements through screening processes to provide guidance on injury prevention
Provides information and assessments of patron progress to higher graded specialist concerning the participation, progress, behavior, and/or physical reactions of patrons assigned. Suggests alternative or modified exercises or movements
Ensures patron completes Physical Activity Risk Factor Questionnaire (PARF-Q), reviews and suggests proper way forward
Establishes/reviews the schedule of events, conducts tours, sets-up/prepares gymnasiums/facilities/playing fields prior to scheduled start time for events (e.g., lap swim, lifeguard training, exercise programs, races, pool parties)
Coordinates recurring fitness and recreation events, ensuring adherence to safety standards
Provides customer service to patrons using the facility, to include: greeting customers; checking identification cards to ensure only authorized users are entering facility; issuing and receiving gear/equipment; and registering patrons for facility use, events, and/or classes
Prepares after-action reports and program evaluations to assess impact
Coordinates scheduling of facilities and resources to support training, workshops, and special events
Answers telephone providing information in regard to facility hours of operation, upcoming special events and programs, etc
Completes the Daily Activity Reports, handling cash where fees apply, verifying the amount of money collected and dropping the cashier bag in the drop safe
Assists in planning, scheduling, and publicizing various recreational activities and maintaining related supplies to attract and motivate participants
Maintains records of participation and program usage
Distributes educational and promotional materials highlighting performance, health, and recreation in overall readiness
Sells and restocks retail items associated with activities; conducts inventory
Ensures facility is open and/or closed at the posted time
Ensures safe use of facilities, equipment, and training spaces
Monitors and checks the security of premises
Monitors activity within the facility, circulating among the patrons to assist with basic use of equipment/gear and to maintain good order and discipline
Properly cleans and maintains equipment/facilities, maintains inventory, performs general janitorial services to ensure interior spaces are in a clean, neat, and orderly state at all times (e.g., sweeping and mopping floors; dusting and cleaning workout areas, mirrors, bathrooms, and locker areas; straightening equipment and accessories)
Makes minor repairs to facilities and equipment when appropriate and assists with outdoor maintenance
Reports maintenance problems, material deficiencies, and unsafe conditions or discrepancies that cannot be repaired in-house to the supervisor
Qualification
Required
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study related to recreation or physical education
At least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education
At least 1 year of specialized experience assisting in conducting structured fitness and recreation activities
An equivalent combination of education and specialized experience
Degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained
Proof of education MUST be submitted at time of application for consideration
Knowledge of fundamental fitness and recreation principles
Knowledge of practical human performance and fitness techniques and procedures to provide fitness guidance
Knowledge of safe exercise techniques sufficient to provide basic instruction to patrons
Knowledge of safe use and operation of fitness equipment, and basic fitness equipment maintenance/repair
Knowledge of human performance programs
Knowledge of Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) policies, rules, and regulations involving the work area
Knowledge of basic arithmetic to compute charges and disperse change accurately
Knowledge of cash handling procedures
Skill in motivating participants
Skill in instructing participants in fitness and human performance activities
Ability to competently and independently carry out day-to-day recreation operations
Ability to provide fitness equipment orientation
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
Ability to complete daily reports
Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
