Field Auditor I

AFSCME is seeking a Field Auditor I to provide financial and auditing services to its affiliates and management. The role involves conducting field audits, assisting with inquiries, and training affiliate secretary-treasurers on financial record keeping.

Responsibilities

Conducts field audits of affiliates which consist of a review of revenue and expenses to ensure financial activities are in compliance with the AFSCME Constitution and Financial Standards Code. Prepares financial reports on findings and recommendations
Responds to inquiries from affiliates requesting assistance or information on a number of accounting and financial matters. Provides information on routine matters
Assists affiliates with questions from the Internal Revenue Service and/or the Department of Labor
Acts as liaison between affiliates and insurance company related to bonding claim activities
As requested, conduct training courses to instruct affiliate secretary-treasurers in how to set up, maintain and monitor local union financial record keeping
Assists in the review of affiliate financial records. This includes reviewing the accounting procedures and records, noting discrepancies and summarizing findings. May participate in high priority projects related to accounting, pensions, conventions, organizing campaigns or others that further the mission of the International Union
Assists with special short-term projects dealing with Accounting Department operations. These may involve internal audits of various activities to ensure proper compliance with established procedures
Assists in coordinating the annual informational mailing to affiliates apprising them of current IRS filing requirements of IRS Forms 990/990-EZ/990-N
Audits surety bond and affiliate annual financial reports and generates letters with recommendations for corrective action. Prepares delinquency listings for affiliates that have not submitted surety bond and affiliate financial reports
Assists in the implementation of International sponsored accounting and administrative programs which convert manual systems to automated systems
Performs other duties as assigned

Required

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in accounting and auditing
A minimum of three (3) years of work experience in an auditing or accounting environment performing tasks which provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Knowledge of forensic auditing and accounting practices and principles, and appropriate reporting requirements of financial statements
Ability to collect, analyze and compare financial data and identify data anomalies
Ability to conduct research and make logical, reliable, and sound financial conclusion and to make appropriate auditing judgments
Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and complete assignments to meet deadlines
Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office Suite with a concentration in Excel
Ability to use databases and financial application software
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation to proofread and compose correspondence
Extensive travel, extended work hours including weekends and a valid driver's license are required
