Range Safety Technician
USAJOBS is seeking a Range Safety Technician for the Pohakuloa Training Area in Hawaii, which is the largest Department of Defense installation in the Pacific. The role involves advising personnel on range conditions, investigating incidents, and providing technical support for training operations.

Responsibilities
You will advise personnel of range conditions such as terrain matters, areas open for reconnaissance and availability for various training areas
You will investigate incidences which caused personnel injury or property damage
You will inform users of proposed firing problems involving artillery, mortar position and use of laser test, training
You will inform users of factors affecting various locations which might limit, restrict, or interfere with proposed locations, the presence or possibility of duds, endangered habitat areas, historical sites, or airspace restrictions
You will perform range training assistance and technical support
Qualification
Required
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation
This position is designated as drug testing required. Incumbent is subject to pre-employment and random urinalysis testing in accordance with DA guidelines. Incumbent is required to carry passengers
A current State or Federal driver's license is required; must be able to operate both a four-wheel drive vehicle with standard transmission and an off-road all-terrain vehicle. Work requires driving on hazardous roads and terrain
Pre-employment physical is required. Incumbent is required to carry passengers. Incumbent may be required to carry and/or lift up to 50 lbs
Duties involve working with or in close proximity to explosives or incendiary material in an environment where munitions training is being conducted, or in close proximity of unexploded ordnance
Rotation between major training areas using privately owned vehicle, shift work, rotating shifts and days off, weekend/holiday work and overtime may be required
Temporary Duty travel (TDY) may be required up to 10%
Must be able to attend and successfully complete appropriate Range Operations Professional Development courses (ROPD) per TC25-8 / Chapter 4 and 5 guidelines within the first year of employment or as scheduling and funding allow
This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg amendment to the gun control act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing assistance to military units conducting training in ranges, AND assisting in the inspection and maintenance of ranges, maneuver areas and training areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06)
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06)
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted
Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration
You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship
One year trial/probationary period may be required
