Responsibilities

Evaluate risks and develop security procedures to safeguard personnel, property, and operations from unauthorized access and threats
Implement and monitor security measures, including safeguards, cameras, and alarms
Provide input on security engineering and electronic security systems during VHA project design and construction phases
Collaborate with GS-09 Physical Security Specialists to ensure compliance with federal and VA security protocols
Collect information and prepare reports on facility compliance with VA regulations and Physical Access Control Systems (PACs)
Respond to violent incidents, conduct investigations, question witnesses, and arrest individuals violating laws
Enforce various laws and regulations to protect visitors, employees, and government property while maintaining a peaceful environment
Maintain data confidentiality and ensure secure handling of hard copy and electronic data

Physical Requirements: The work requires full use of extremities, normal hearing, and vision to conduct on-site security surveys, inspections, and assessments. The duties require prolonged standing, walking, crouching, bending, lifting, reaching, pushing, stooping, and climbing stairs and ladders indoors and outdoors

Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements
Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP)
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond master's or equivalent graduate degree
Driver's License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely
Firearm Requirement: VA Police Officers are required to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty on VA property
New VA Physical Security Specialist are required to attend an 8-10 week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Satisfactory completion of this course is a condition of continued employment
A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature
Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others
A character investigation will be conducted on applicants selected for employment
As a condition of employment, must qualify to be issued a firearm and semi-annually with assigned firearm, annually with an expandable Straight Baton (MEB), maintain a valid State or Commonwealth Driver's License and pass annual physical and psychosocial assessments
Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week
