5+ years expPrince William County’s Department of Public Works is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Assistant Maintenance & Operations Superintendent to join their team at the County’s Municipal Sanitary Landfill. This role is responsible for planning and coordinating maintenance and repair of facility infrastructure, supervising operational personnel, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Responsibilities
Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair landfill environmental control systems associated with stormwater management, groundwater monitoring, leachate collection and pumping, landfill gas control, and SCADA systems
Maintain and repair facility infrastructure, including buildings, service areas, vehicle scales, utilities, roads, and fencing
Safely operate hand and power tools and small equipment
Assist in planning and scheduling preventive and corrective maintenance
Identify and review specifications and support procurement activities
Oversee and coordinate contractor activities, including construction and maintenance projects
Manage approximately four employees performing facility and grounds maintenance and up to thirteen employees performing roadside litter collection
Participate in hiring, training, evaluating performance, and mentoring staff
Establish priorities, create work schedules, assign work, monitor progress, and develop and implement solutions to improve teamwork and efficiency and resolve operational issues
Prepare and maintain operational and regulatory documentation and reports
Use formal work order management software to assign, track, and report on maintenance tasks
Routinely interact with County staff, vendors, businesses, and the general public
Handle customer inquiries and resolve issues in a professional and tactful manner
Analyze operational data to enhance efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance
Implement continuous improvement initiatives to optimize facility operations
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or GED is required
Minimum five (5) years of recent, progressive, full-time experience overseeing and performing maintenance and repair of facilities and grounds, including directly supervising employees
Special License Requirement – A current Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Class II Waste Management Facility Operator License or the ability to obtain the license within ten (10) months of hire is required for this position
Driving Requirement – Having and maintaining a valid driver's license is a requirement of the position. This job also requires driving a county vehicle
Essential Service Requirement – This position is designated as an essential employee. Responding to emergencies, inclement weather, and other issues that may impact facility operations outside of regular working hours, including on holidays and weekends, is required
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – This job is a safety-sensitive position that requires wearing personal protective equipment, including but not limited to safety shoes, safety vest, and hard hat
Physical Requirement – This job is considered very heavy work and requires exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, over 50 pounds of force frequently, and over 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work is generally performed in both inside and outside environments and may be exposed to vibrations, intense noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, inadequate lighting, and poor ventilation. The ability to safely work in inclement weather and around vehicular traffic and heavy equipment is required. The job also requires the ability to routinely walk long distances over rough terrain in noisy and dusty conditions, as well as climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, and grasping
Pre-employment Requirement – Successfully passing a pre-employment physical examination is a condition of employment for this position
Preferred
High school diploma or higher level of education is preferred
Minimum five (5) years of full-time experience constructing, operating, or maintaining landfill environmental control systems is preferred
Minimum five (5) years of full-time experience maintaining and repairing complex facility infrastructure, including mechanical and electrical systems, is preferred
Minimum five (5) years of full-time supervisory experience, including directing and evaluating 10 or more employees in an operational environment, is preferred
Minimum three (3) years of work experience dealing directly with the public in a customer service setting is preferred
Experience using work order management software is preferred
Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, is preferred
