The Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer will provide engineering consulting services and support the design, operation, and maintenance of nuclear, accelerator, and non-nuclear facilities across the laboratory.

Responsibilities

Assess condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems, including nuclear (Haz. Cat 2) and accelerator facilities
Generate written recommendations
Expertly apply engineering judgement to engineering challenges
Develop design scopes
Estimate design efforts
Interface and coordinate with project stakeholders
Produce Construction Contract Documents
Adhere to LANL's Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, prevailing codes and standards
Provide reviews of outside A/E designs
Review construction submittals, provide RFI responses and generate Document revisions
Mentor junior design personnel
Ensure integration of green initiatives on all projects
Ensure timely engagement of third-party resources such as Sustainability and Commissioning
Foster timely coordination between all design disciplines
Support organizational initiatives for improvements of design and business practices
Identifies and/or leads activities within mechanical engineering in support of facility design, operation and maintenance
Make visionary organizational contributions regarding design and business practices
Recognized as a coordinating figure and subject-matter-expert (SME), helping to ensure designs are code-compliant and meet customer needs
Use broad and/or unique knowledge and skills to contribute to improvement of LANL's Engineering Standards
Use independent and wide latitude judgment in determining course of action to accomplish objectives
Facilitate technical growth of the mechanical design team
Assist Team Lead with work planning, staffing projections and hiring

Required

Demonstrated broad-based, engineering experience with projects involving mechanical design for new facilities and facility modifications, including nuclear or hazardous (rad) facilities
Minimum 6 years working experience with engineering principle of operation of both mechanical and plumbing buildings systems
At least 6 years of practical experience in design and principle of operation of building automation systems
Minimum 6 years of experience in application of building codes, standards and green initiatives related to facilities design
Minimum 6 years working experience in preparing calculations, application of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering challenges
Demonstrate ability to support construction execution, including timely review of submittals, requests for information, design changes, aid in non-conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation and produce accurate as-built documents
Demonstrated ability to mentor early career engineers
Demonstrated advanced knowledge and ability to articulate concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen
Minimum 12 years of experience leading a design team and/or organization
Minimum 12 years of expertise in industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to your engineering discipline
Minimum of 12 years of experience in engineering work planning, budgeting, and design coordination
Demonstrated broad and/or unique expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above, as well as relevant hazardous and/or rad experience
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above, as well as relevant hazardous and/or rad experience
This position is subject to 426.2A, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances

Preferred

Advanced engineering or technical degree is desirable
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is desirable
For level 3: Current EIT Certification (any US State)
For level 4: Current NCEES Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering (any US State)
Professional experience with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
Professional experience in design and principle of operation of infrastructure systems
