Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. The Mechanical Engineer will support the Engineering Services Weapons Project Delivery group, providing engineering solutions for nuclear, accelerator, and non-nuclear facilities while working on multiple design teams.

Responsibilities

Develop engineering judgement
Learn how to navigate and implement prevailing industry codes and standards
Promote energy conservation through sound application of HVAC technologies and buildings systems control
Perform HVAC calculations
Obtain, evaluate and compare equipment selections from manufacturer's representatives
Gain expertise in the development of design deliverables including drawings, specifications, test and inspection plans (TIPs), statements of special inspections (SSIs), and calculations
Develop skills to independently run all mechanical engineering facets of a project from scoping to construction
Foster relationships with project stakeholders and customers as a representative of Engineering Services
Facilitate technical growth of the electrical design team
Ability to support timely and collaborative construction execution. This includes timely review of submittals, requests for information (RFIs), design changes, non-conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation and produce accurate as-built documents
Basic knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards
Knowledge of HVAC and plumbing buildings systems
Knowledge of engineering work planning and design coordination
Ability to collaboratively problem solve, show commitment, and function well in a team environment
Thorough knowledge of mechanical engineering principles
Ability to apply building codes, standards and green initiatives to facilities design
Demonstrated proficiency generating calculations

Required

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above for Mechanical Engineer 1
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above for Mechanical Engineer 2
This position at the higher level is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. This DOE Order establishes entry-level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years of job related experience and 1 year of non-reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities
To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances

Preferred

Current registration as a professional engineer (any US State)
Design experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations
Master's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university
Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit tools and work processes
Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
