Government Administration

Responsibilities

Supervises, directs, and evaluates new and current employees during simulation experiences, field training, education sessions, skills practice/checkoffs, and remediation sessions. Provides feedback for current employee performance appraisals and Daily Observation Reports (DORs) for new employees
Provides oversight, organizational support of the daily operations of the Simulation Lab and the Mobile Simulation Team including the orientation, training (including continuing education and refresher training) and monitoring of new members
Provides technical support, preventative maintenance, emergency maintenance, and ensures readiness of all robotic medical simulators, medical task trainers, and related medical training equipment
Ensures the simulation needs of the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP), the Academy, Departmental Continuing Medical Education, Clinical Affairs, and First Responder agencies are met
Develops, tests, and implements new formative and summative simulation scenarios for new hire academies, field training evaluations, and final clearance evaluations
Maintains, inventories, and operates all simulation equipment and supplies. This includes ensuring that manikins, AV equipment, and other simulation tools are updated regularly and are in optimal condition for training sessions
Evaluate employee performance (new and current) through direct observation and review of clinical and operational performance reports in accordance with established policies, procedures, protocols, and expectations
Serve as a staff educator to meet division needs, including instruction via lecture, demonstration, or skills instruction
Remains current with general educational and simulation curricular advances
Ensures that simulation experiences are appropriately documented and evaluated (scenarios, preparation, etc.)
Performs related work as assigned

Required

Extensive knowledge of the policies, practices, procedures, operation, and patient care of Durham County EMS
Knowledge of EMS operations equipment, supplies, and procedures
Knowledge of current educational methods and materials related to employee training
Knowledge of the Office Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) rules and regulations
Demonstrated computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
Strong organizational skills and keen attention to detail
Ability to evaluate system needs through review of national and state education requirements, student feedback and clinical research
Ability to train and instruct internal and external customers of all ages
Ability to function as a clinically qualified paramedic in the Durham County EMS System
Ability to troubleshoot information technology, computer networking, audio-visual, and robotic hardware and software issues
Ability to inspect, service, clean, and maintain task trainers and robotic medical simulators
Ability to recognize and evaluate skills of potential and existing employees, as well as identifying how to acquire and/or further develop those skills
Ability to speak and deal tactfully and effectively with internal and external customers orally and in writing
Ability to analyze the concepts necessary for accomplishment of required written and oral records and reports
Ability to demonstrate appropriate problem-solving techniques
Associate's Degree in Technology, Education, or Health-related field from an appropriately accredited college or university
Four (4) years of experience functioning independently as an EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic in a 911 system and teaching or utilizing simulation in an EMS education program or five (5) years of experience functioning independently performing similar tasks in a hospital, clinic, or other medical care program or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience conducting simulations using a high-fidelity patient simulator
Current or previous North Carolina EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic Credential and or National Registry with the ability to apply for NC Paramedic reciprocity
North Carolina EMS Instructor Level I or equivalent
Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator or Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist
Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina State Driver's License with an acceptable three-year driving history
