Chief Scientist for Data and Artificial Intelligence
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is establishing an Artificial Intelligence Excellence Initiative within the College of Engineering, funded by a major donor. The Chief Scientist for Data and Artificial Intelligence will lead the development and integration of AI-driven academic programs and research, collaborating with faculty and industry partners to enhance educational outcomes and research initiatives.

Responsibilities
Advance the development, implementation, and integration of AI- and data-driven academic programs and research within the COE and across the UNL campus
Help coordinate and support AI-related research initiatives and funding opportunities in the college and on the UNL campus
Contribute to AI-related undergraduate and graduate curriculum development
Promote ethical and responsible AI implementation in engineering education and research
Qualification
Required
Ph.D. degree in computer science, data science, or a related field
Five years relevant experience including the following: Leadership in data science or AI project management
Demonstrated success in managing complex data or AI research projects
Strong collaborative skills and ability to work effectively with diverse teams
Experience developing and implementing new initiatives and technical strategies
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to mentor staff and students in data and AI-related projects
Aptitude for problem-solving in complex, multidisciplinary environments
Experience engaging with AI-related start-up companies or innovation initiatives
Preferred
Experience applying AI and data science in engineering-related or interdisciplinary projects in a higher education setting
Proven ability to secure external funding and manage research or technical projects
Familiarity with emerging technologies and data infrastructure supporting research
Commitment to ethical, transparent, and inclusive AI and data practices
