Responsibilities

Collaborate with inventors and attorneys to draft high quality patent applications in accordance with established protocols, drafting about two new patent applications per month
Learn and understand technology and inventions of Corning businesses to conduct patent searches and draft targeted patent applications; meet with inventors in labs and factories
Negotiate directly with USPTO patent examiners to achieve valuable protection for Corning’s inventions, responding to about five US office actions per month
Consider advice of foreign counsel, and then instruct foreign counsel how to negotiate with foreign patent offices concerning Corning patent applications worldwide, about ten per month
Recommend foreign filing strategy, divisional patent strategy, maintenance of granted patents, as well as abandonment of IP in coordination with business direction

Required

Bachelor of Science (BS) and/or advanced degree in relevant technology, preferably chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, or physics, but other technical backgrounds and experience will be considered
Must have passed the United States Patent and Trademark Office examination for registration to practice (law degree not required)
2+ years of full-time experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications, enough to competently draft and prosecute quality patents without extensive additional training
Have drafted and filed over 30 priority-establishing patent applications
Have responded to over 100 office actions, including both US and foreign instructions

Preferred

Prior patent examiner experience at USPTO
Experience in a law firm or patent department in-house
Prior technical experience e.g., engineering or other technical role in industry
