Responsibilities

Extend our simulation pipeline to reproduce dynamic actors accurately in simulation
Research and evaluate various reconstruction algorithms and integrate the most promising of them into our simulation framework
Develop and improve models that realistically simulate the behavior of other road agents like pedestrians and vehicles
Leverage software engineering and machine learning skills to ensure these simulated agents exhibit a wide range of plausible and representative human behaviors
Help create high fidelity synthetic data for training and testing AV AI, as well as real time sensor data for hardware-in-the-loop simulation
Develop 3D ML models and training datasets for 3D sensor simulation using modern machine learning architectures
Collaborate with the Sensors, Perception, and Validation teams to evaluate and iteratively improve the fidelity of sensor simulation
Help create agentic AI systems capable of generating novel scenarios for validating the safety and performance of Zoox's autonomous driving technology
Leverage software engineering and machine learning skills to gather data, fine-tune existing diffusion / foundation models, add new capabilities to our LLM agent, and evaluate success against customer requirements
Help build scenario generation and analysis tools used to evaluate robot behavior via simulation
Leverage software engineering and machine learning skills to recreate high-fidelity simulation scenarios from recorded real-world driving data

Required

Currently working towards a B.S., M.S., Ph.D., or advanced degree in a relevant engineering program
Must be returning to school to continue your education upon completing this internship
Good academic standing
Able to commit to a 12-week internship beginning in May or June of 2026
At least one previous industry internship, co-op, or project completed in a relevant area
Ability to relocate to the Bay Area, California or Seattle for the duration of the internship
Interns at Zoox may not use any proprietary information they are working on as part of their thesis, any published work with their university, or to be distributed to anyone outside of Zoox
Fluency in C++ and/or Python, as well as a strong understanding of data structures and algorithms
Strong skills in mathematics, particularly linear algebra
Experience with large-scale code projects

Preferred

Broad knowledge of Gaussian Splatting or Neural Radiance Fields
Strong understanding of generative AI techniques including diffusion, GAN, and transformers
Experience with game development or simulation frameworks used in robotics
Experience with 3D game logic
Experience with Typescript
